James Muriuki is internationally one of the best known Kenyan artists, using photography as his base medium. In 2006 James Muriuki was chosen for Snap Judgments: New Positions in Contemporary African Photography, Okwui Enwezor’s show at the International Centre for Photography/New York.

And yet, most of his work has not been shown in Kenya. This is his first solo exhibition, a show that is long overdue. For this occasion, 3Collect, an artist collective focused on curatorial practice, has put together a retrospective of Muriuki’s work in the past years, showing the variety of his art projects and the development of his use of photography.

Rear View includes Muriuki’s latest works as well as photographs that have been included in important exhibitions around the world such as Snap Judgments, Space: Currencies in Contemporary African Art at Museum Africa in Johannesburg and Events of the Self at the new Walther Collection Museum in Germany.
