Increasing heaps of unwanted and poorly disposed electronic products such as refrigerators, computers, mobile phones, television sets, all contain harmful or toxic substances that, if not well managed, present serious adverse impacts on the environment and human health. Is Kenya in a position to handle the growing heaps resulting from digital revolution, lifestyle changes all arriving in the country?

Knowledge is power and the people must be educated and be made aware that the use of electronics may eventually turn against them and the future generations, if strongest measures and policies are not put in place to control trade and disposal of E-waste.

The speaker will highlight the magnitude of the current and future impact of E-waste in Kenya.

Book Launch – Fresh Paint: Literary Vignettes by Kenyan Women *

* WHERE: GOETHE-INSTITUT, Maendeleo House, Monrovia Street,Nairobi
* WHEN: Wednesday 29th June 2011 – 6 PM
* ENTRY: FREE

This anthology of poems and short stories is the culmination of a joint literary project by AMKA – Space for Women’s Creativity – and Goethe-Institut Kenya.
For over 3 years, a literature forum has been held in the library of the Goethe-Institut on the last Saturday of every month. Over this time the participants wrote poems and short stories, which were then read or performed, and subsequently discussed and critiqued by their peers and invited literature professors and established writers. This provided an opportunity for the young writers to improve their skills and become better producers of the written word.
This anthology is the first collection of a selection of writings presented by the young writers and discussed during more than 30 literature forums. AMKA and Goethe-Institut are proud to officially launch this collection of hitherto unpublished works. Some of the writers will read and perform their own pieces during the launch.
The launch will be in the form of a moderated panel discussion with the following panelists: Anna Mwangi, Elizabeth Orchardson-Mazrui, Mshai Mwangola and Tom Odhiambo (Moderator).

Kenyan Movie: Ndoto Za Elibidi, from Jun. 24 2011 @ 20th Century Cinema

An improbable duo, a British actor turned charity founder and a Kenyan art director, came together and shot a movie on HIV/AIDS. The result was Ndoto za Elibidi (The dreams of the Elibidis) which was presented at the Zanzibar Film Festival last summer, winning the award assigned by the Italian Cinema Africano di Verona. Nick Reding is an actor from the UK with a long background in film television and theatre. In 2002 he founded Sponsored Arts For Education (S.A.F.E.), a charity working with slum dwellers in Nairobi and other locations in Kenya. SAFE works with young Kenyan artists, producing theatre and films, to challenge stigma and discrimination with a message of compassion solidarity and hope. Kamau Wa Ndung’u grew up in Mathare slum in Nairobi. He has worked as an actor and director in theatre for many years. Kamau has been the creative director for SAFE for the last five years. Ndoto za Elibidi is their first film. The story was devised originally as a stage play with actors from the Nairobi slums. The plot pivots around the theme of acceptance and love as the protagonists – parents, four daughters and their lovers – come to terms with HIV and ghetto life. Cutting back and forth from fiction to documentary, from the original stage play to actual locations, the film takes viewers on two parallel journeys: we watch the story, but we are also watching it through the eyes of the ghetto audience. Southworld has met the two film directors in Verona, where they presented their film at the local Festival of African cinema.

“This movie comes from a theatrical opera, says Kamau, after we performed the play in slums, schools or near a health centre, many asked us to have a DVD, they wanted to watch it again and again. We thought to shoot the theatrical performance and put it on a DVD. Then we thought, why not shooting it in a better way. This is how we developed the idea of this movie”. “The cast of the original play was chosen through an open audition in Nairobi, adds Nick. We wanted to look at a series of issues facing the people in the slum. The play was devised over a six months period and has been performed for over five years in the slums. I think there is quite a lot of information in the movie that usually Europeans are not clear with. Actually, many young people in Europe are confused. They believe that drugs are available and there is a cure. Also the treatment of rape victims, another underlying theme in the movie, is important. So there is information there, and Europeans should not get too complacent and believe they know it all”.

Works by: Kavita Sagar, Sidney Mangongo and Thom Ogonga

Sidney MANGONGO
Born in 1983, Sidney lives with his mother in Kibera (Nairobi) and has over the last months shown a growing interest in painting, collage, and a practice based on founded images. Patiently, he spends hours flipping through magazines and cutting images that resonate in his psyche. It is a playful practice of combining images and texts that become meaningful once put together. What others see as lost material, he sees as found material which becomes his interest with this question in mind: who has access to information and how does it influence our perception of women in our society?
This is his first time to exhibit work.

Kavita SAGAR
Kavita is based in Nairobi since 2009. She is inspired by the rich and colorful cultural past and present from her region Rajasthan. Her paintings for this exhibition capture the moods of the ocean and she relates this to the upheavals of life. At times calm and peaceful, this series of paintings capture the painful, powerful and unpredictable position of the woman in her society and the way she is perceived. Her paintings are abound with distorted human figures.
She has a Master’s Degree in Drawing & Painting from Mohan Lal Sukhadia University Udaipur in 2004, and is currently doing a research in paintings for her PHD in post modernism and contemporary Art of Rajasthan.

Thom OGONGA
Born, raised, schooled and working in Nairobi, Thom is a self-taught artist whose specialty is in painting, printmaking & has recently ventured into experimental photography.
He is inspired by fashion, music, and urban lifestyles and is even more fascinated by the controversial city nightlife. All the activities that color the night excite the artist in him and feature prominently as the core theme of his work.
He has exhibited widely and featured in various public art projects, workshops & residencies both locally and abroad.
