Play: Taming of the Shrew, Feb 10-25 2012 @ Phoenix Players

Taming of the Shrew (by William Shakespeare, directed by George Mungai) opens on the 10th of Feb and runs until Saturday 25th Feb 2012. Tickets only Ksh. 650. Student nights Every Thursday. Buy 1 ticket @ Ksh. 400 and get 1 Free.

SYNOPSIS
The “shrew” of the play’s title, Katherine, or Kate, is the daughter of Baptista Minola, with whom she lives in Padua. She is sharp-tongued, quick-tempered, and prone to violence, particularly against anyone who tries to marry her. Her hostility toward suitors particularly distresses her father. But her anger and rudeness disguise her deep-seated sense of insecurity and her jealousy toward her sister, Bianca. She does not resist her suitor Petruchio forever, though, and she eventually subjugates herself to him, despite her previous repudiation of marriage.

Concert: Song of Strings, Feb. 25 2011 @ Oshwal Academy

As with all Navrang’s presentation, there is no doubt that this concert will be a very memorable one and true to its title – SONG OF THE SOULFUL STRINGS. Sitar is an instrument that has gained world-wide popularity among Indian instruments, and many artistes of non-Indian cultures have taken keen interest in it.

Ustad Shahid Parvez is first a vocalist and like many great Indian instrumentalists, a Tabla player as well. He then took Sitar playing under tutelage of his father and Guru Ustad Aziz Khan. They descend from six generations of Sitarists.

The playing style of Etawah Gharana is very much in the hands of Ustad ji. His rendering is that of Gayaki Ang (melody presentation) and is renowned for his lyricism in notes and blending the melody with rhythm intricacies.

Rhythm accompaniment will be provided by our very own PRITAM VIRDEE. This will be very satisfying to the visions of Navrang that our able artiste has been chosen by an artiste of Ustad ji’s calibre to accompany him. This is not a usual situation among high musical circles and therefore a matter of pride for us all. An artiste has to really struggle hard to accompany another artiste who is highly accomplished. It shows how able is our own Tabla Nawaz, Pritam, a disciple of his uncle Gurdev Singh.

Folks, do not miss this concert. It is Sitar, it has the greatest maestro on the stage and with our own Kenyan Pritam accompanying.

Get your tickets form Easy Surf, 1st floor, Sarit Centre. Rates are 3000/-, 2500/- and 1700/-. For further details you may call 0733265336.
