Stand a chance to win a month of free yoga @ Bikram Yoga Nairobi

Kenya’s first Bikram Yoga studio is coming to Nairobi! Opening Soon!, 2nd Floor, Lavington Green Shopping Centre, Nairobi.

Bikram Yoga is a 90 minute series of 26 Hatha yoga postures and two breathing exercises, carried out in a room heated to 40 degrees celcius and 40 percent humidity. The combined heat and humidity increase muscle flexibility and can help to prevent injuries. Bikram Yoga is also very detoxifying, releasing large numbers of toxins through the breath and through the skin by sweating.

Because of the combination of the heat and the sequence of postures, the practise is very intense, and has dramatic and immediate results. This yoga is highly addictive. Hundreds of thousands of normal people around the world have been cured of physical ailments, anxiety and stress, and have dropped several dress sizes in the process.

Bikram Yoga Nairobi is offering members a beautiful studio with a state of the art heated yoga room, large changing rooms and showers, free unlimited purified drinking water, a juice and smoothie bar, and yoga clothing boutique.

Abstract
Discussions on police reforms have been part of the public, official and academic discourses on democratization and change in Kenya for over a decade. Going back to the 1990s, the conduct of the police force has been the subject of numerous policy and academic reviews. Over the years, new actors such as private security agencies have emerged, new subjects of policing have also emerged and ideas on policing of these subjects have also evolved. However, these important changes in policing in Kenya have not received sufficient scholarly attention, leaving practitioners and researchers alike with limited optics with which to view the process of police reforms and security sector reform in general.
The one day workshop will bring together leading researchers on policing and security to share their ongoing research and to take stock of the key theoretical developments in the policing of contemporary Kenya.

The workshop is jointly convened by Mutuma Ruteere – The Centre for Human Rights and Policy Studies, Nairobi and Ambreena Manji – The British Institute in Eastern Africa, Nairobi

Abstract
Domestic tourism is a growing industry in Kenya (30% of the yearly touristic national takings) and constitutes already the main frequentation of some of the National Parks (53% of the visitors in Nakuru). For Kenyan authorities, domestic tourism seems to be useful as it may facilitate ethnical understanding and develop national pride and cohesion. In the process of selection of national monuments, the National Museums of Kenya have tried to promote the ethno-cultural diversity of the country. This new touristic development strategy of Kenyan institutions questions strongly the social sciences in relation to free time, leisure and touristic mobility of the Sub-Saharan populations.

Film Screening: Welcome to the South (Benvenuti al Sud), Jul 18 2012 @ Italian Institute of Culture

Film starts at 6.30pm – free for IIC cardholders

Directed by: Luca Miniero
Starring: Claudio Bisio, Alessandro Siani and Angela Finocchiaro
Year of production: 2010
Running time: 102 minutes
Genre: Comedy
Language: Italian / English subtitles

This is a very funny Italian movie – playing with the stereotypical differences between North and South of Italy. Highly recommended!

The story of a southern postal employee unhappily transferred to the north of Italy – A self-pitying northern hero dispatched to the Mezzogiorno. The wife of the film’s hero is the leader of a thinly disguised Northern League vigilante patrol with a sense of civic duty so strong she will not let her son accept a balloon from a street trader unless it is accompanied by a valid tax receipt. When her husband is posted south of Naples she buys him a flak jacket.
What he finds is something at odds with his prejudices. The people of the hilltop town of Castellabate are admittedly incomprehensible but they are friendly, honest and live in a place of heart-stopping natural beauty.
