Pirates Beach Bathers

Pirate Beach Bathers Exhibition by Mathias Muehle, Jan. 10-14 2014 @ Kuona Trust

Pirates Beach Bathers
In this exhibition, Mathias Muehle chronicles weekend activities of everyday Kenyans at the coast, particularly the Indian Ocean bathers at Jomo Kenyatta Public Beach, commonly known as “Pirate Beach”, in Mombasa.

The beach bather paintings are also reminiscent of bathers by impressionist and expressionist French and German artists of the late 19th and early 20th century, like Max Liebermann or Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. Mathias deliberately chose to depict these carefree, relaxed scenes of African people enjoying recreation just like in any part of the world. His vibrant, engaging colors reflect the natural exuberance of the people, and the beauty of the equatorial seaside.

Event: Open Show Nairobi January Edition, Jan. 17 2014 @ the NEST

Open Show
Date: Friday, January 17 2014
Venue: The Nest
Time: 7 pm

About
Open Show is a global, volunteer-run platform for visual storytelling through photography, film and multimedia. Our monthly events showcase 5 presenters each with 10-15 minutes to show 20 images or 3-8 mins of video or multimedia. They can use the time to talk about their presentation as much or as little as they want within the time frame. Our mission at Open Show is to use the visual medium of storytelling to create conversation rather than a lecture-style presentation, and so the audience will be able to connect directly with the presenter by asking questions, and providing comments and feedback.

NB: Open Show Nairobi are always looking for more presenters, so if you are interested in presenting 20 of your photos or 3-8mins of video, we highly encourage one and all. Please submit here: http://openshow.org/submissions/
Choose photos that tell a story and be ready to discuss with the audience.

TNL@C Liron
Date: January 9, 2014
Venue: Choices, Baricho Road
Time: 8-11 pm

About
Liron is a soul and jazz singer/songwriter. An artist, by birth and choice, who thrives on her ability to create. She brings out her love for colours, words and sound in all her work. Painter, poet and interior designer, she finds inspiration in life…the things she sees, hears and feels.

She began writing songs when she was 8 years old and like most singers she too performed at her local church. She names Aretha Franklin, Joss stone and Sam Cooke as singers who have influenced her style of music.

For her debut album, Liron teamed up with Michel Ongaro, a multi-instrumentalist and well renowned musician to be the executive music producer for the album, titled,’ Prodigal’s Diary’. He brought his vast musical experience to the project and
was able to capture the vision that Liron had for the 12 track project. With his vast skills in music and Liron’s adventurous spirit, the result is an album that has dared to experiment with fusions of different styles while maintaining a mature appeal and soul in the music.

The already released singles from this album have received positive feedback from music makers and lovers with her 2nd single “Lets Play Pretend” going further and being used as a soundtrack for a short film and inspiring the title of the film.
