Nature Kenya is holding its 5th Annual Golf Tournament at Karen Country Club on Friday 21st March, 2014 at 12 noon.
This year’s golf theme is under the Lungs for Kenya campaign initiated by Nature Kenya with an aim of raising funds to plant 1 million trees in 4 sites in Coastal Kenya in 2014. To support this campaign, proceeds from the golf tournament will go towards assisting communities living adjacent to the Arabuko Sokoke Forest establish, manage and sustain communal tree nurseries, and also plant 100,000 seedlings as part of the forest’s rehabilitation program.
Nature Kenya has been partnering with 19 local community environmental groups, which have a total of over 1800 members in a range of sites across the country. These local communities near Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas are actively participating in tree planting. Last year, this effort was recognized when Nature Kenya was awarded the Total ECO Challenge Gold award for planting 1 million tree seedlings in Mount Kenya, North Rift and Western regions in the year 2012. These seedlings continue to be nurtured to see them grow into mature trees.

For 20 years, a subculture has grown under society’s radar in the hills of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is the culture surrounding “Funk Carioca”, a musical rhythm which mixes American electronic funk sounds of the 1980s with all the diverse influences of Brazilian music. “Funk Carioca” or “Baile Funk” is one of the most interesting musical movements in the world, but it comes from what is at times one of the most violent and poorest places in the world: the slums of Rio de Janeiro (favelas). This documentary tells stories of sex, love, poverty, and pride among Rio’s marginalized people. It’s a film that’s fast, heavy, and violent like the city itself.
