About
The exhibition series Sasa Nairobi is the basis of our work in the field of contemporary art. We aim at working with artists from Kenya that have an advanced and innovative approach and often commission them to produce new work. Since 2008, we have exhibited more than 40 artists, the last being a show by Paul Onditi.

Chokora Wear is a contemporary fashion research project that explores how fashion can be used as a vehicle to reclaim a hidden culture or identity. As Chokora Wear enters its 3rd season, this edition focuses on the phenomenon of the “MA-LOOK”, in other terms the “KOOL”, and explores what it means to be cool, feel cool and been seen cool. Just as the previous ones this edition shall unveil different modes of dressing, like official wear, casual wear, street wear, etc.

Maasai Mbili is a community based artist group which was founded in Kibera slum, Nairobi in 2001. The M2 collective is engaged in contemporary art programs as well as in community outreach projects and workshops with children, in which Fine Arts are used as an interactive communication medium between artists and other community members.

Description
Praised as “an excellent film… about basic human dignity”, Manasseh M. Chege and Wanjiru Gathu’s heartrending movie follows the remarkable and challenging story of Julia (played by Rose K. Njoroge) a 16 year old emotionally traumatized girl being raised by a financially struggling mother and an abusive father.

The film will be the centerpiece of the International Women’s Day celebrations as the world celebrates the numerous gains and progress made to combat violence against women and advocate for women empowerment and education.

Compelling, humorous, deeply human, Strength of a Woman is a story about, the power of determination, hope and the courage it takes to find your voice as Julia’s determination to gain an education and have a better life than her mother had becomes her driving force to change her life forever despite growing up in an environment of poverty and her father’s gambling, alcoholism and abuse.

The film, which won an amazing five awards at the 2014 Kalasha Awards for Best Feature Film, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Lighting and Best Original Score stars renowned Kenyan actors with Rose K. Njoroge taking the Lead role and Laura Leila Wingate, Ashford Kirimi, Sandra Dhacha taking up supporting roles which they expertly and vividly depict.

South Sudan: Peace Beyond the Ceasefire
After fifteen months of civil war in South Sudan, regional and international mediators continue to broker talks for a permanent ceasefire and power-sharing arrangement acceptable to both sides. But such a settlement will be just the beginning of a process towards lasting stability in a country where the potential for conflict is rooted in a host of difficult and deep-seated problems. These range from poverty and insecurity, weak national and local political structures, entrenched conflict economies, and inter-ethnic rivalries, to the competing interventions of neighbouring countries.

On 27 February 2015, the Rift Valley Institute Nairobi Forum will host a panel discussion to launch the new book South Sudan: A Slow Liberation, by Eddie Thomas. The event will examine the limitations of the anticipated settlement and discuss opportunities for regional governments and the international community to work together – and with the South Sudanese – for a more enduring peace.

Moderator: Don Bosco Malish, Open Society Initiative for Eastern Africa

Panellists: Eddie Thomas, Author; Peter Biar Ajak, Center for Strategic Analyses and Research; Casie Copeland, International Crisis Group

About
Donated to the residents of Nairobi in 1906 by Alibhai Mullah Jeevanjee, this 5 acre recreational park is one of few green spaces gracing Nairobi City. The park has on more than one occasion been faced with extinction when the then Nairobi City Council in collaboration with development partners planned in 1991, and later in 2007, to develop it by constructing in its place a multi- storey parking lot, bus terminus, markets, theatres and shopping malls (Zarina Patel,”revitalising” Jeevanjee’s Gardens). These plans were shelved each time following objections raised by Zarina Patel (Jeevanjee’s grand-daughter), the late Prof. Wangari Maathai’s and the Green Belt Movement, and other activists.
The park features beautiful gardens and trees providing a welcome shade from the tropical sun. It is dotted with artistic benches, and sculptures that add to its appeal. Its location makes it an ideal picnic site for the city residents. On a typical weekday, you will find many people relaxing on the benches or lawns, or just walking around the park.
Come and learn more about the plans that the Nairobi County has for Jeevanjee Gardens, interact with park users and meet some of those who have actively been involved in saving the park.
