Fringe Churches

Exhibition: Fringe Churches in the Periphery of Seoul, Apr. 9-19 2015 @ Kuona Trust

Fringe Churches
Opening: April 9, 2015 at 6 pm
Venue: Kuona Trust

Exhibition dates: April 9-19, 2015

Concept
This documentary work represents an inquiry into the religious, cultural and financial dynamics of non-traditional churches located in the periphery of Seoul.
At the same time, it explores the diversity of architectural designs that range from the traditional hanok style house-churches to the so-called mega churches that accommodate thousands of parishioners.
In the process, the work questions the functions that churches perform in contemporary South Korean society.

About the artist
Noah Miller is a photographer born in the United States and raised in Germany. He has been pursuing photography seriously for the last 15 years and studied the medium at the International Center of Photography (New York City), the former London College of Printing, the Torpedo Factory (Washington, DC) and Eyes in Progress (Paris). In 2004, he was a winner in the ABB international photo competition.

His current work has shifted towards exploring the interplay of people and their constructed environments. While living in Nairobi, he would like to explore the ethnography of interracial families as his next long-term project.

About the Competition and Exhibition
The Barclays L’Atelier award is one of the most prestigious art contests in Africa. Having run in South Africa for more than 20 years, the organizers have expanded the opportunity to other emerging visual artists from Botswana, Zambia, Ghana and Kenya.

Beginning January 2015, artists aged 21 to 35 were invited to take part in the art competition. In Kenya, the Barclays L’Atelier art competition organizers have partnered with Kuona Trust Art centre to coordinate and facilitate the competition logistics.
Artwork from finalists in all 5 countries, including Kenya will be showcased at the Absa Gallery in South Africa before the winner is announced in June 2015.

The five prizes on offer consist of a 6 month trip to Paris, three merit award prizes and the Gerard Sekoto Award for the most promising artist. The top 10 finalists will all be placed on a two-day art professionalism course to assist them in managing their careers.
