The Japan Information & Culture Centre invites you to the screening of the movie “Equinox Flower (Higanbana)” which will be shown on Saturday, October 31, 2015.

Admission is free of charge and the movie screening is open to all film fans.

Synopsis
The family of Hirayama Wataru, a business corporation executive, consists of 4 members, his wife, Kiyoko, eldest daughter, Setsuko, and second daughter, Hisako. Hirayama sympathises with Fumiko, the daughter and only child of his close friend, Mikami, who without the consent of her parents has set up house with her lover. But he does not agree to his own daughter Setsuko’s sudden request to marry a young man named Taniguchi. Hatsu, the owner of a ryokan style hotel in Kyoto which Hirayama patronizes, has comes across a marriage proposal for her daughter, Sachiko, and has come several times to Tokyo for consultation. Sachiko sympathises with Setsuko and helps to push along marriage plans for Setsuko before Taniguchi is transferred to Hiroshima. Hirayama vows he will not attend the wedding ceremony, but his wife finally persuades him to attend. On a trip to Kyoto, Hirayama hears from Sachiko that Setsuko is saddened by the cold attitude assumed by her father. Hirayama feels sorry for is daughter and feeling somewhat sheepish over his previous obstinacies, he heads for Hiroshima where his daughter is living her married life.

The twentieth century has gone through many hardships and witnessed great changes in China. It is an epoch of heroes. Their emergence has added colour to the unfolding history of China.

This exhibition featuring members of the Chinese cultural elite in the 20th century will focus on the life and great deeds of nine outstanding representatives, who have exerted important influence on Chinese culture.

These eight famous persons are: Madam Song Qingling (AKA Soong Ching Ling), who once served as Honorary President of the People’s Republic of China, acclaimed as a great lady as well as our national treasure; Cai Yuanpei, China’s modern democratic revolutionist and a distinguished intellectual; Li Dazhao, one of the founders of Chinese Communist Party and the modern library in China; Lu Xun, the pioneer of China’s New Culture Movement, remembered as “the Soul of Our Nation”; Guo Moruo, an encyclopedic cultural giant and a famous social activist; Mao Dun, China’s modern literary giant; Lao She, a master of language also known as “the People’s Artist”; Xu Beihong, a prominent educator in the fine arts, “Father of Modern Chinese Painting”; Mei Lanfang, a master of the performing arts and the progenitor of the “Mei style” of Beijing Opera.

They shall forever be the pride of the Chinese Nation.

Every nation has nurtured its own eminent figures. The legacies left by these heroes belong not only to their country of birth, but to the whole world.

This exhibition is held with a view to enhance cultural exchange, understanding and friendship between China and Kenya by presenting China’s celebrities, Chinese culture and history.

The Magic Flute is the most popular of all Mozart’s opera. Set in a an imaginary country where magic things happen, it deals with courage, honesty and love. The music is light and sparkling, appealing to both adults and children alike.
The premier will be on the 1st of November at the KNT at 2.30 p.m.

Volume 16 of the Contact Zones NRB series feature the work of the artist’s collective Maasai Mbili (M2). Founded in the early 2000’s by Otieno Kota and Otieno Gomba, the collective now consists of 5 permanent members, several long-term partners, many, many associates and almost infinite friends.
