Pots and Identities: The language of clay
Pottery is one of the most enduring artifacts in the archaeological record. It has been used the world over to provide relative dates for sites and also to reconstruct life ways of the prehistoric people.

This exhibition is the archaeologist version of the Kenyan history and the contemporary practices of potters/ artists through the language of clay. In both cases, the identity of the potter is easily discernible from either the style or decorations of the pot.

In some cases, archaeological data cannot stand alone and archaeologists have used present day practices to interpret their data. Some of the comparative data include studies on pottery functions, pottery making technologies, innovation and diffusion…

Outstanding archaeological and traditional pottery alongside contemporary works by Magdalene Odundo, Mzee Edward Njenga, Waithira Chege and Emmanuel Ondif among others.

Book Launch
During the exhibition opening there will be a book launch of Edward Njenga’s autobiography ‘Telling it in Clay’ written by Lynette Kariuki.

The sixteenth edition of the Lusophone Film Fest Nairobi will be on the 7-May as of 5pm at the Goethe-Institut Nairobi. We will have a Portuguese documentary about the family left behind when people emigrate, a Brazilian short about a man tormented by his national football team loss in the 1950, and a Mozambican feature film about keeping the balance between the world of the living and the one of the spirits:

– Antonio, Dashing Antonio (Portugal, 2015, Ana Maria Gomes)
– Barbosa (Brazil, 1988, Jorge Furtado and Ana Luiza Azevedo)
– The Last Flight of the Flamingo (Mozambique, 2010, João Ribeiro)

Recognised with international awards at film festivals around the globe, the cinema from the Portuguese-speaking world is still mostly unknown to the general public. This 240 million people linguistic community is a thriving one, promoting over 80 film festivals and cinema awards every year, with movies mostly consumed in the respective countries.

The Lusophone Film Fest is a showcase of the diversity of film production in the eight Portuguese-speaking countries spread across 4 continents. The festival presents multiple works (documentaries, animations, shorts and feature films), in sessions of several films from the different countries.
