About
Since 2017, artists Greenman Muleh Mbillo, Joan Otieno and Dani Ploeger have been working together in Nairobi. Their project, Disobedient Devices, imagines a future with technology that draws from local stories, myths and memories, instead of globally standardized digital systems by Big Tech. Through the modification and appropriation of used electric and electronic appliances they envisage a technological culture that connects to people’s lifeworlds and that goes beyond nihilistic and unsustainable ideologies of endless growth and ‘progress.’
This exhibition shows eight devices created by artists, fundis and academics who participated in workshops organized in 2019-20, as well as three short science-fiction films by Mbillo, Otieno and Ploeger in which these objects are put to work.
Disobedient Devices is organized by Warembo Wasanii Art Studio in Nairobi and The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, University of London. It is supported by the Global Challenges Research Fund.
