About
One of the most sobering and positive things to happen in Kenya in 2008, soon after the post-election violence, was “Cut Off My Tongue”. At a time of great tension and uncertainty, this dramatized poetry show ranted, provoked, inspired and broke into song and dance as it explored the truths that shape us as Kenyans: our beliefs, the way we behave and why.

“Cut off My Tongue” deals with interrelated stories about life in Kenya grouped around tribe and ethnicity, political critique, identity, tradition and genealogy. Although the main focus of the show is Kenya, the themes addressed cut across post-colonial Africa and the continent’s struggle to deal with the question of “Nation-State”. It was performed by a multi-racial cast to sold-out audiences in Kenya, Uganda and the UK (Hampstead Theatre, London and the Hay Festival 2009). It is moving, entertaining, brave and frighteningly honest. It is politics – and love – that bites as it teases. If you are African in mind, body or spirit, you must see “Cut Off My Tongue”!

Also in the month of July this year, “Cut off My Tongue” will be performed at the Ubumuntu Arts Festival in Rwanda in memory of the 1994 genocide. Your support will get them there!

Dance for Sale plays at the interstices between public and private spaces, between the logics of the state and that of the market. Where is dance located? Who decides what is to be shown? What stages does a piece have to go through before it gets to the public?

Dance for Sale researches dance as a product. The “business with art” is the focus of its choreography. Grupo Oito, a collective of independent artists that was founded by Ricardo de Paula in 2006, invites the audience to a dance market and leaves them in a space negotiating the price of art. The principle is simple: those who pay first, watch the performance. The rest stay outside and get another chance. Dance for Sale is a dance market! Like all good markets, it is always searching for new products. With the main goal to keep the products updated, Grupo Oito offers a platform where dancers from different backgrounds and cultures interact and exchange experiences and movement.

Grupo Oito’s dancers Laura Alonso, Caroline Alves, Zé de Paiva, Ricardo de Paula, Natalie Riedelsheimer, and Miro Wallner will give a workshop and develop the show together with several Kenyan dancers.

Ricky na marafiki presents an eve of Afro jazz featuring The Villagers band, the Villagers is an Afro Fusion Band that blends rich Afro sounds with smooth western overtones. A brand new sound from Africa!

They shall be performing at an Evening of Afro-Jazz the Gentleman’s edition alongside Ricky na Marafiki on the 30th of June at Alliance Française.

Ricky na marafiki will perform tunes from their Tucheze and so simple albums, Our opening act will be Miss Kemunto and her band playing a song called mandazi

About
In her recent work, Deqa explores the conflict of identity, culture and tradition which emerges in the lives of young, urban Africans. Very much a product of the modern world, she looks back to her roots in Somalia using the architecture of the Waab, the Somali traditional home, to try to rationalize the juxtaposition of these issues in her life. The resulting works are multi layered images, in keeping with the complexities of her investigation.
