Strong Karakire is a Rwandan artist-in-residence at The GoDown Arts Centre.
‘Flowing Lights’ is a body of work developed during this residency and is a reflection of his experience in Nairobi. Strong says “In my mind painting is a game full of tribulation, joy and surprise. It is collision of bits of my memory and emotions, which finally settle down on the canvas.
The creation of my painting is like an adventure; full of uncertainty. The significance of painting is that l can face my true self.”

Jua Kali is an exhibition of works that represents the journey of the artisan into self-creation. It stems from the informality of curating ones life experiences to generate a perceived self-image.
The exhibition is inspired by the informal sector, built from the opportunistic personality and perseverance of the Jua Kali worker who often use recycled or found objects to develop their creations.
It is a collaborative work by photographer Tahir Karmali, found object artist Dennis Muarguri & glass master Tonney Mugo.
The exhibition opens at Kuona Trust on the 17th of July 2014 from 6 pm.

Romantic fling with cleaner lands doctor in hot soup!
Trapped is a hilarious audience-pleasing fast-paced comedy. Its physical over-the-top makes our last show Dangerous Affairs seem like a prayer meeting by comparison. The comedy is starring Kenya’s superstars directed by Mbeki Mwalimu. The setting of Trapped is a medical hospital. A doctor (Nick Ndeda) is practicing the lecture he will deliver to an assembly of fellow gynaecologists in less than an hour. The speech’s success is vital to his career.
Interruptions abound. First it’s various other medical staff rehearsing their quartet dance routines for the Sakata Dance Competition (i.e. the cheeky Nigerian doctor played by Maina Olwenya; tough talking matron played by Yvonne Carter; the temptress – sexy and alluring nurse played by Lulu Wilson and the new intern doctor played by Henry Gitau Ngogoyo). Then a long-ago ex (Wangari Gioche), who was once a cleaner at the hospital, brings the news that she gave birth 16 years earlier to the doctor’s daughter (Janet Kirina) and that the daughter is in the hospital in search of Dad! Yes, there is his harsh wife (Rosemary Waweru), and she knows
nothing of the past liaison!
And in the spiraling chaos of deceit, false identity and manic cover-up that ensues, the mission is to avoid the daughter, pacify the ex, keep the chief specialist and hospital deputy director (Derrick Amunga) at bay and fend off various distractions, among them a patient from deep in the village excited by the goings-on (Johnson Chege) and an inquisitive police officer.

Out of Town/Sports: the 6th 5-A-Side Diani Beach Touch Rugby, Jul. 11-13 2014 @ Diani Beach
The 2014 edition of the annual Diani Beach 5-a-side Touch Rugby Tournament – the sixth edition of the event – will be held on 11th, 12th and 13th July 2014 on Diani Beach, considered by many as one of the best beaches in the world with five kilometres of pristine sand, clear blue waters and coral reef. It is the perfect venue for an annual Beach Touch Rugby Tournament that is not only hugely social but also very competitive with the standard of Rugby getting better every year. The final last year was very exciting and only concluded with a sudden death try after three periods of extra time.
There are four categories of teams; men’s, women’s, mixed and veterans. Mixed teams must include at least 3 ladies and veterans players must all be over 40.
George Barbour an ex East African Tuskers Veteran – and his team of organisers conduct a 2 days 1 night programme on 4 pitches. The tournament starts Friday evening under flood lights, games are played Saturday all day and Sunday see the finals finishing early afternoon.
Beside the tournament, Forty Thieves Beach Bar offers a wide range of entertainment over the weekend for everyone to enjoy, not mentioning the Football World Cup final games happening on that week end that will attract a large audience at the beach bar.
Diani Beach Touch Rugby together with the Rugby Patron’s Society support the Age Grade Program to engage with underprivileged children to give them something positive to focus on and to identify and nurture talent at an early age, maintain focus, develop rugby skills and prevent indulgence in drugs and/or the possibility of becoming street children. Up to date the Diani Beach Touch Rugby has raised KES 800,000 for this worthy cause.
This year we will also support the “South Coast Pirates” a new Rugby Club called and formed by the serious players from the Diani, Ukunda area. The players developed their initial skills from the Diani Beach Touch Rugby tournament over the last few years, organized by George Barbour of Forty Thieves Beach Bar.
These young players have been requesting for a more formal approach to the 15 a side full contact game, and with their enthusiasm and that of rugby coach David Nolan, it has now materialized and we hope that it will become one of the top Rugby Clubs of the future.
Many of these keen players are young and of very limited means and need all the help and encouragement that we can find, both in skilled training and financial support.
Their base is the Ukunda Show ground, which need to be upgraded and brought up to a satisfactory level so as to be usable for future serious rugby and soccer games for the benefit of all.

The ARTIST: Sylvia B. Bryant – Dancer- Teacher -Choreographer-Educator
Sylvia B. Bryant holds a B.S. degree from Tuskegee University and M. S. from Vanderbilt University graduate hours from Connecticut College School of Dance in New London, CT., and has studied extensively at Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre in New York City.Sylvia’s teaching and choreography is based primarily on the Martha Graham technique. Her background includes work with artists such as Martha Graham, Rod Rodgers, Jose Limon, Charles Moore, George Faison and Margaret Fisk Taylor Doane, one of the pioneers in sacred dance. She has danced and conducted workshops throughout the country and has directed dance programs at Fisk University and Philander Smith College. Sylvia has done choreography for a number of television productions and has made a number of television appearances. One of the highlights of Sylvia’s dance experiences was an invitation to London, England to dance in the historic Wesley’s Chapel for their morning service.
Presently, Sylvia is an Administrator in the Montclair Public Schools in Montclair, New Jersey as the District Parent/Family Coordinator

On July 4, 2014 Sarabi, Kenya’s favorite local afro-fusion band will be reclaiming the Alliance Francaise arena for a full evening dedicated to uplifting and inspiring music that aims to shed a light on current social issues. Tickets are 500ksh in advance and 800ksh at the door.
SARABI was formed in 2005 and has in the recent years proved to be one of the most promising Afro Fusion bands in Kenya. The group is made up of 8 young men hailing from the Eastlands Slums of Nairobi. All the members started playing music at an early age and have over the years worked together to create one of the most solid bands in the Kenyan music scene. Their music, made up of heavy traditional Kenyan rhythms, Benga and a blend of Western sounds has proved to be the missing link in the Afro-fusion genre of music.
Sarabi, described as “Kenya’s most sought after artists”- Vibe Weekly, have recently performed to critical acclaim at festivals and concerts including: Blankets and Wine, African Liberation Day, Doadoa Arts Market- Uganda and Nairobi Live.
On July 4, 2012 Sarabi will be performing hit songs including ‘Fuata Sheria’ featuring Juliani and for the first time – will be playing unreleased upcoming songs of peace inspired by Kenya’s current political climate. Also at the event will be Sarabi’s all new merchandise line and the band will be revealing a brand new look.
