Screening and presentation of the documentary ‘Conflict over water in the Singing Wells’ by Christine Adongo and Benoît Hazard, researchers from the Kenyatta University and the School for Advanced Studies in Social Science (EHESS), will precede discussions on natural resource management in Northern Kenya. Experts from the French Agency for Development and UNESCO will share information on the biodiversity conservation project in Northern Kenya as well as the hopes and challenges associated with the recent discovery of water aquifers in Turkana.

A representative from the Marsabit County Executive Committee for Water, Environment and Natural Resources will present their vision on social services development in Marsabit.

Bezalel Ngabo realized he had artistic abilities when he was very young. He was born in the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kinshasa where he attend the fine arts school, academy des beaux-arts to build his skills. His art later took him to Kenya where he held several exhibitions providing him opportunities to further his career. Bezalel now resides in Nairobi, Kenya. He is married to a beautiful Kenyan lady and is currently a father of one.

Painting is Bezalel’s way of appreciating the beautiful world we live in, especially in Africa to educate his viewers of the basic virtues of life that help contribute in making our world even more beautiful. Painting mainly abstracts, Bezalel draws his inspiration from the Holy Bible, which he believes is a mirror to the human spirit, and from day to day happenings in our society. All his pieces are original and unique.

Maramaso is a concept developed by a musician/activist born and raised in the slums of Nairobi. The name is derived from the philosophy’s end goal, a “Man Raise Man Society” in which support for fellow man and youth empowerment are more important than personal gain in one’s own life. This is how Mandela, the subject of the film, lives his life. The film illustrates his revolutionary philosophy of love and his daily struggle to survive in an environment that encourages self-promotion.

On 8 January 2014 the parliament of Puntland elected its fourth president since the semi-autonomous state of Somalia was created in 1998. In a closely contested election run-off, Abdiweli Mohamed Ali Gaas, a former Prime Minister of Somalia, beat incumbent President Abdirahman Sheikh Mohamed Farole by a one-vote margin.

The transition of power was peaceful, but the new president and his cabinet have to contend with a number of pressing challenges. These include competing clan interests, relations with the Federal Government of Somalia and with the secessionist state of Somaliland, as well as security, humanitarian and development issues. At this meeting of the Nairobi Forum, speakers will share their insights on Puntland’s future.

Confirmed speakers include Mohamed Jama Waldo of the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue (HD Centre), Dr Cedric Barnes of the International Crisis Group (ICG), Adam Jama Shirwa of the International Development Law Organisation (IDLO) and Safiya Abdullahi Yusuf of the Puntland Diaspora Forum.

About
This is exhibition of painting from Kibera slum. The artist is Otieno Kennedy Rabala who belongs to Maasai Mbili studio. He is one of those who has raised the Maasai Mbili studio highly reputed.

His paintings are designed to document everyday occurrences, scenes in slum, such as traffic jam, ladies from market or women who being beated by her husband. “The things that are happening in Kibera make me want to paint the ghetto, the Kibera life, the slum life.”

Besides his representive painting style, the exhibition contains his new series which uses mix media such as trash, branch with paint.

The Project: ART JAM Summary

ART JAM is a project which aims to empower people through art. Currently we are addressing to expose artists in Kibera, so that the artists can earn income through their activities. We’re planning to expand our activity into such as art school, art shop or work shop. In order for it, we’re seeking cooperative company.
