Whether it’s Nairobi or Naples, Bristol or Johannesburg: in all the major cities of Africa and Europe, people get together in dedicated spaces to dance to music and party – and form communities and subcultures. Club culture is a global phenomenon, but what kind of music are people dancing to? What sort of public sphere do club cultures create? And what happens when the club music from two different continents meets head on?

Over the last few years we have organised quite a number of projects that go beyond Kenya, but TEN CITIES is our biggest endeavor so far. It is a music and research project that brings together musicians and writers from ten cities in Africa and Europe. The project initiates music production and details the unwritten history of club culture in Cairo, Johannesburg, Luanda, Lagos and Nairobi as well as in Berlin, Bristol, Kiev, Lisbon and Naples.

To start the project off in Nairobi, we are setting up a club at an special location. For one night only, we transform an actual restaurant into a great party place by adding a distinct clubbing atmosphere to the interior.
Blinky Bill and DJ Raph will spin and play some hot tunes to join us all in!

African Hip Hop

Symposium & Concert: The Afrikan Hip Hop Caravan, Apr. 18 2013 @ Goethe-Institut Auditorium

African Hip Hop
Date & Time: Thursday, 18th April 2013, 2.00 – 5.00 pm & 8.00 pm
Venue: Goethe-Institut Auditorium
Entrance: Free

The Afrikan Hip Hop Caravan connects artists and cultural educators in five cities: premièring in Cape Town in February, it paved its way through Johannesburg and Harare, will enter Tunis in March and finally reach Nairobi in April 2013.

Hip Hop music has been an important tool for youth to express themselves. Through symposia, the caravan tries to explore the contribution of Hip Hop to community struggles as the basis of a broader struggle for self-emancipation. Moreover, performances act as organic link between the cultural activists and the people who are engaged in daily social struggles.

The performing artists in Nairobi are: Ukoo Flani, Mau Mau, Lness, Ran-D and Vuli Vuli of Makaburi.
Contributors of the Symposium include: Dr. Aggrey Nganyi Wetaba and Dr. Priscilla Nyawira Gitonga, a lecturer at the department of Music and Dance at Kenyatta University. Her doctoral studies set out to explore the contribution of Hip Hop music to the construction of identity of female late adolescents in South Africa.

Dance Performance: Lamhe – Moments, Apr. 20 & 21 2013 @ Oshwal Centre Auditorium

Over the years Kaminis School of dancing has put up high standard dance shows and they have always been a hit with the Nairobi audience.

Once more it is putting up the show LAMHE meaning moments at OSHWAL CENTRE AUDITORIUM ON THE 20TH AND 21ST OF APRIL.

The show is based on the music of the Bollywood classics of 2000, which are LAMHE , LAGAAN AND DEVDAS.

90 senior girls from the class have participated in the production. It is a beautiful blend of semi classical and classic Bollywood numbers which combine art and entertainment.

LAGAAN which is a lavish ,rousing entertainment in the old fashioned tradition, is directed by Ashutosh Gowanker. It is a tale of an Indian village beset by draught .Without a drop of rain , the villagers urge the
almighty to pour water from the heavens for them to survive , based on these we have taken the songs , ghanana and o mitwa .Radha kaise na jale has been added from the same movie done in a traditional style,

LAMHE; is the story of moments ;moments of passion , moments of ecstasy, which we show through songs like megha re megha and morni baga ma bole.,

DEVDAS; THE 2002 BLOCKBUSTER, A SANJAY LEELA BHANSALIS FILM.

The tale of 2 soul mates whose love is thwarted by Indias rigid class structure. The saga of a man called Devdas who loved, loved and just loved, his love for PARO -his lovely childhood playmate and as
youth beckoned , the love intensified, but fate created the wall of separation between them. Which completely shattered Devdas . He left behind a testimony of true love that was pure, chaste and undemanding.

Based on that concept, all the songs of Devdas are rich in lyrics and music. We have taken 5 numbers from this movie , summing up with Dola Music for this movie is by Ismail Darbar . Rarely have we seen an album where all the songs are perfectly sung
