This is because this is the year, which will see the re-awakening of the people who will be very good, those who will be very bad and those who will irritatingly just sit around by the roadside and see the good things and the bad things happening.

Dohtyfamily are laying down their tunes at the Nairobi Gallery this Saturday at the opening of “Grassroots Upgraded”. This exhibition, SLUM-TV’s biggest art project so far, presents unique LOMO-photographs about the life in Nairobi’s Eastlands.
That’s reason enough to enjoy some drinks and good reggae music.

Grassroots Upgraded ¦ Reflections on Nairobi’s Eastlands
Exhibition
The exhibition is Slum-TV’s biggest Art project so far, filling the Nairobi Gallery with photographs, installations and video works. It presents a unique perspective of life in Nairobi’s Eastlands, challenging the stereotypes about life in the marginal areas of town and revealing a dynamic and bustling urban life.
More than anything else, this exhibition seeks to raise questions. Questions about how Nairobi is represented. Questions about an image that a city has, and how this can be shaped. Questions about who is creating this image, and what the relationship between images and power is. The camera used, “LOMO”, presents their own unique aesthetic: improvised, spontaneous and unconventional expression. The corresponding catalogue will be launched at the opening.
The exhibition is curated by Sam Hopkins.
It is a partnership of Africalia and Goethe-Institut in conjunction with the National Museums of Kenya.

Break-Dance: Breaksession® Bboy Battle, Jan. 13 2012 @ Goethe

Breaksession® Bboy Battle is a break-dance event unique in Kenya. The first edition started in July 2011 and very quickly became a success story. Developed and organized by Joe Nene (a.k.a. Bboy Kay/BreakDjKay) the goal is to spark the Bboy Revolution in Kenya and bring a realization of Bboy/Breaking as one of the elements of Hip-Hop.
Joe Nene started dancing 17 years ago inspired by the late Michael Jackson, and continued, influenced by Usher, the late Aaliyah, and Missy Eliott. Ever since, he continuously dreamt of what he has achieved now! An event which would make it possible to battle, compare and work with others who have similar skills and want to share them.
He and his crew organize this event which aims to have Kenyan break-dance recognized internationally and lift it to the next level!
