Rakeeb Hassan returns to Kenya for an exhibition of his recent works. Having lived in Kenya in the 1990s and studied fine arts in Kenya, Rakeeb held several solo exhibitions here before emigrating to Canada in 2000. Rakeeb has also exhibited in the UK, India, Bangladesh, Switzerland and Canada, and has worked on a choreographic project in France, in Montpellier and La Rochelle. Rakeeb’s stylized and colourful paintings are inspired from folk art, African masks and flora and fauna.

Tom Mboya is a self-taught visual artist. He discovered his art talent at the age of nine when he did alot of mud moulding with his younger brothers and friends. He subsequently started sketching on the ground by use of sticks and eventually on a paper and a pencil. He started taking art seriuosly when he won a second class prize on an inter- schools drawing competetions nation-wide, then organized by a Bata shoe company. Although a hotelier by proffession ,he has constantly been an active player in the art scene and because of passion in art, in sept. 2008 , he resigned from his employment and went into painting full time. He uses acrylics, oil and water paints.
Momanyi’s sculptures are about introspection; examining one’s own thoughts and feelings, assessing situations in a move to restore confidence. He draws inspiration from the contemporary political climate and political turmoil. He contrasts this with ancient people, strong in faith, intact memories, patience and endurance. His works are designed to generate thought and it is important that the viewer spares and shares a moment in an attempt to restore peace and tranquility amongst global inhabitants.

Synopsis

Julia and Jane have been best friends for life and both happily married for the past five years. But before their marriages, both had brief affairs with Juma- a lady-charmer from the Coast. Now Juma is visiting town and has asked to see them both. Julia and Jane’s husbands are out for a day of golf, and the two ladies nervously await Juma’s call. In the meantime, they quarrel, make up, get high on champagne and quarrel again. Juma arrives- very very late; the husbands turn up unexpectedly! This thread of action is flipped over by Jasmin- Julia’s new house-help- who seems to know a bit of everything about everything- a veritable ‘show-off’ and busybody!

Julia and Jane are played by ROSEMARY KINYABE and NJOKI KAGWANJA- who both make their debut on the Phoenix Stage. Fred [Julia’s husband] is played by WILFRED OLWENYA while Jane’s husband- Willy, is played by CARTER KAVUTI- staging a comeback to Phoenix. Jasmin is played by ESTHER NEEMA [last seen in Local Murder] while ANDREW MUTHURE makes an appearance as Ringo Juma!

Rules for Dancers
Form a crew of six (6) dancers.
All crew members must be 18+ and ready to travel. Please carry your passport.
Each Crew should also prepare two (2) different three (3) minute routines.
Each Track should be Hip-Hop (110-135bpm) containing NO obscene lyrics. Please carry a CD and a back-up CD.
The Dress Code is STREET. But avoid branded or obscene outfits.
Show respect for your opponents. No bad attitude or foul language will be tolerated.

The winning crew will represent Pan-Africa Championship in Ghana from July 23 to August 5 2011
