A short documentary filmed in Mogadishu will also be screened.

Seminar: Slum Upgrading Projects in Nairobi, Apr. 6-7 2011 @ Alliance

The French Institute for Research in Africa (IFRA-Nairobi) is conducting a seminar on Slum Upgrading Projects in Nairobi focusing on the challenges in programme implementation.

New slum estimates show that currently almost a billion urban dwellers in the world are living in slum conditions. The French Institut for Research in Africa, which has been involved in research projects on informal settlements in East African cities for many years now, presents this conference that brings together key stakeholders involved in slum upgrading projects as well as representatives of associations in Kambi Moto and Korogocho where slum upgrading projects have been carried out. Research papers as well as practical examples, putting forward theoretical frameworks and methodological tools will be shared with the participants.

Programme summary:

* KENSUP and KISIP: Overview, comparisons and discussions

After a successful album with former partner Cannibal, Sharama of the Hip Hop conglomerate Ukoo Flani launches his debut solo albumVunja Winga (Swahili for “Breaking the Boundaries”).

Recorded at Headbangaz International, it features appearances from various Hip Hop, RNB and Reggae artists. This album is bound to ruffle feathers within the local Hip Hop scene due to its diverse content. The tracks on Sharama’s album spread messages of daily life, hope, love, as well as club hits.

This launch will have performances by various guest artists

‘Ziba Ufa’ is a project and experiment aimed at encouraging the use of the gallery, in particular the walls, as alternative surface for artistic expression. This is meant to challenge not only the artists’ individual processes, but also the audiences’ perception/stereotypes as to exhibition spaces and their function.

Humanity exists within and around walls; vertical manmade surfaces whose sole purpose is to keep the desirable contained, out of reach of the undesirable and vice versa. This duality is constantly applied in the illustration of social/human issues.

The agreed point of departure, which may act as a loose theme, is for each of the participating artist to express their understanding of walls. This is within the context of individual artistic practice.

The participating artists are: Dennis Muraguri, Sidney Magongo, Beatrice Wanjiku, Andrew Njoroge, Michael Soi and Gor Soudan (Writer).

The Project kicked off on the March 14, 2011 and the idea was initiated by Peterson Kamwathi.
