Running till 7th March 2012 at the International School of Kenya Arts Centre is the “Art Show & Sale”. Each year Friends of the Arts (FOTA) at the International School of Kenya organizes an annual show and sale of work by over 100 Kenyan and international upcoming and established artists. The art work will range from sculpture to painting to photography to glass work.

One of the most notable figures in the recent history of Art in Kenya is Mbuthia Maina. Maina joined Kuona Trust’s Art studios at the National museum in 1997 and has recently been an instrumental member of the artist led collective Masaai Mbili.
He was one of the artists that started working in the 90’s in a conceptual way using different art media including video art. His background of anthropology and sociology informs his conceptual methods. His works are often illustrations of his journeys and experiences-inclusive of political histories.
Mbuthia Maina has been one of the few Kenyans exhibited at a major art event in the global art scene: Liverpool Biennale 2002.

Wanjiku: Enigma, Allegory, Metaphor or Image?
In the 1990s, then-President Moi, responding dismissively to popular pressure for constitutional reform, posed the rhetorical question ‘What does Wanjiku want with a constitution?’ He thus unwittingly created the phenomenon of ‘Wanjiku’ who has since then become ubiquitous in the Kenyan public imagination and discourse as a way of gesturing to ‘public opinion’, the ‘common person’, or the ordinary mwanainchi. Although it might seem encouraging that “Wanjiku’ should emerge in the male-dominated world of the Kenyan public sphere, her appearance does not necessarily imply either a more equitable gender context in Kenya nor even an increased awareness to gender issues.
Wanjiku is successful as a popular icon because she is easily translatable into a number of different social contexts and because her persona is down-to-earth.
The participating women artists present their individual interpretation of ‘Being Wanjiku’.

The upcoming B.O.G.O.F.( Being Only Great Of Finesse) event, themed LEAP THIS YEAR, is scheduled for the 25th February 2012. at the Hilton Hotel, from 3pm to 7pm. Tickets are 300/= Kenya Shillings.
You will be entertained by a host of talented artistes – poets, rappers, live bands, sketch artistes and photographers.
The act scheduled to perform are; Annette and Wairimu Ng’aru backed by a live music band. Pepe Haze, Muki Garang, Point Blank, Xtatic, the Duchess and DreamTeam will also grace the event with their musical prowess.
The poets at the event include Koa, Sitawa, RixPoet, Nzilani, Michael Onsando, Joe and Samo amongst others.
Also in attendance will be Sketch artistes that will sweep you off your feet with life like drawings and you will get to sample the work of some of Nairobi’s more talented photographers.
