The Sky Inside You is a pair show between Eltayeb Dawelbait (Sudan) and Mostafa Sleem (Egypt), two artists who connect and draw inspiration from childhood memories of The Sahara Desert. Memories make us who we are.

Join us on this oneiric adventure on the desert, an ephemeral art exhibition that will make you wonder and travel between dreams, sand, the moon and the stars.

About
Brazilian Visual Artist Leo Coimbra presents to the Kenyan and East African public her most recent installations as well as a retrospective of her work. She has previously exhibited in New York, Washington, New Delhi, Quito, Lima, Mexico and several Brazilian cities.

The “In Vitro” show at the Nairobi National Museum follows a successful solo exhibition held at the Museum of the Republic in Brasília, in February 2019.

The installations present in reused and recycled jars and glass containers a fascinating collection of objects and images, inspired by the Victorian “cabinets of curiosities” and “rooms of wonder”. In the artist’s words, they represent “a narrative of survival”.

The retrospective also contains paintings, collage, textile and assemblages from previous series. In “circulars”, the artist explores the many meanings and interpretations of the circle and circularity: the circle of life, the eternal beginning. In “healing work” and “prayer flags”, Leo Coimbra explores forms of devotional popular painting common in the rural areas of Latin America and Asia, the concept of Art used as Cure or as the staging of the cure. Her “boxes”, inspired by Joseph Cornell, talk of the “poetic theater of memory”

Samuel Githui has been well known for his figurative paintings, combining sensitive observation with technical skills. This new body of artworks reveals a remarkable shift from realism to surrealism.

“This work is a continuation of a previous experimental study, that was exhibited two years ago at the ‘Hatua na Kuruka’ (‘Step and Jump’) exhibition at Kuona Trust.

My current work has been focusing on motion and progression, by attempting to create motion on a static composition, as earlier expressed in the chalk drawings “Transformation”, exhibited in 2018 at Circle Art Gallery.

I felt the need to let the medium dictate the cause of action rather than taking the lead on a directive and executive role of creating the work.
By doing so I want to elaborate the relationship and interaction of different media – in this work predominantly acrylic – and discover optional ways and possibilities to communicate and express myself in my artworks.” Samuel Githui

About
Sound is a medium which can you think about yourself in an environment. Listening consciously to sounds and noises places you in time and space and makes you aware of your surroundings. Sound is immediate and distance-less. Pressure waves move through space and penetrate everything in their way. The expanding nature of sound waves establishes a relational connection between sounding entities. These entities might be human, non-human, material or organic and they are never independent, they exist in a network of interrelations. Sounding bodies always have relations to their environment.

This opens up a way of thinking about sound as a medium that forces relations. Thinking through sound produces knowledge that is informed by context, process, “between-ness”, “interrelated-ness”. It has the ability to bring established power hierarchies into question.

In a series of workshops, City Walks worked by practically moving through spaces and listen actively.

The exhibition presents the results of this unique perspective on the city of Nairobi.
