There was a time the world sort African art for among its other qualities, seemingly unspoilt naivety. Ngecha it could be argued, is the birthplace of contemporary art in the country. Throw a stone in Ngecha, and it will most likely hit an artist! Wanyu Brush is one of the fathers of Ngecha, art wise. This exhibition celebrates him with one of his earliest and notably celebrated and collected protégés, Alan Githuka. Githuka’s crowds of heads, Market scenes and his calming landscape, colourful decongested happy slum-scapes, are a part of any worthy contemporary visual Kenyan art collection.

Mirroring this seasoned maestros are the unhinged young, cool, lit 2 contemporaries; Clavers Odhiambo and Richard Kuria. Through their art, we can note how contemporary art in Kenya has spun, literally on its head, and for the better, no doubt. The young Odhiambo is a master of detail. Kuria is literary unconstrained by medium; using broken and laser cut LP Vinyl records to create masterpieces of juxtaposition. Their subjects are widely multi-faceted. ‘Pop’ cannot fully describe their work.

These two very different schools of thought and creation in the Kenyan art trend, is just a snippet of how the landscape was, is and is continually morphing and forming. Growing.

Mtree will hold it’s first art exhibition in Kenya with artworks created by children in rural communities, in partnership with Nairobi National Museum, on May 18th, 2019.

This exhibition is also a special opportunity to share artful stories during UNESCO International Children’s Art Week of how the power of arts and design can lead to positive changes.

Movie stars including Clarke Gable, Ava Gardner, Frank Sinatra, Gregory Peck, Grace Kelly and Sean Connery have all been on location in Kenya for big budget Hollywood films.
