Jua Kali

Jua Kali is an exhibition of works that represents the journey of the artisan into self-creation. It stems from the informality of curating ones life experiences to generate a perceived self-image.

The exhibition is inspired by the informal sector, built from the opportunistic personality and perseverance of the Jua Kali worker who often use recycled or found objects to develop their creations.

It is a collaborative work by photographer Tahir Karmali, found object artist Dennis Muarguri & glass master Tonney Mugo.

The exhibition opens at Kuona Trust on the 17th of July 2014 from 6 pm.

The art project UN.KNOWN SPACES has been developed as an integral part of the large scale scientific research project “Knowledge through Art”, funded by the FWF (Austrian Science Fund). Inspired by the French philosopher Michel Foucault and the phenomenon “Worlds inside the World”, the two German artists, Janina Janke and Maurice de Martin, focused on the United Nations headquarters in Vienna, New York, and Nairobi as these “worlds”.

From 2011 onwards, they collected a total of 66 interviews from the three headquarters conducted with a wide spectrum of UN staff and people from the “outside”, in which they are telling their personal life story.

After having exhibited the work in Vienna, the exhibition now travels to Nairobi.

The videos will be presented in form of a large scale projection, combined with an ambient sound installation played on a Marimba.

Brought to you by CrossCulture XC presents MUNCH 150 Hailed as a “once-in-a-lifetime show” Global interest was huge – not least as a result of one of his four The Scream paintings having recently set a public art auction record of $120 million. Many know Edvard Munch as the man who painted The Scream, but his complete works are remarkable and secure his place as one of the greatest artists to have ever lived.

Munch 150 was co-hosted by the National Museum and the Munch Museum, both in Oslo. With 220 paintings on show, it brought together the greatest number of Munch’s key works in one place.

Once again XC bring to you, here in Nairobi, behind-the-scenes footage to show some of the process of putting the exhibition together — as well as providing an in-depth biography of a man who lived from the mid-19th century right through to the German occupation of Norway in the Second World War. Special guests will also offer their expert insight and knowledge to host Tim Marlow. Munch 150: A superb show and a fantastic event film.
The 90-minute film provides a Full High Definition walkthrough of the exhibit, in depth commentary about featured pieces and a “behind the scenes” look at the process of putting the exhibition together.

The screening with be followed by a conversation with local Kenyan artist Shabu Mwangi whose work is evocative of Munch’s subject matter and style.

This exhibition is part of the ongoing Matatu project which centres on the urban matatu culture. The first phase of this exhibition was a public art project done in the streets of Nairobi earlier this year. It presents street art as a significant art form that is as valuable and powerful as any other.

Dennis Muraguri takes a particular focus on touts, popularly referred to as ‘makangas’. He brings to light the audacious stunts (matatu games) that the touts are famous for.
The artists uses different medium to showcase this unique sub culture whose influence on our society is irrefutable.

The exhibition opens Wednesday, 18th June at 6pm.

This Saturday Kuona Trust hosts the second edition of KIOTA*. This is an event that will bring together an eclectic variety of visual and performing artists.

When artists congregate for the purpose of knowing each other a creative nest of music and poetry, dance and theater, photography and art will follow.

The aim is to create a space for free creative expression, sharing and learning. A platform to help the creatively and intellectually curious meet each other, build ideas and grow as a community.
