In July 2011 the Republic of South Sudan achieved independence, concluding what had been Africa’s longest running civil war. The process leading to independence was driven by the Sudan Peoples’ Liberation Movement, a primarily Southern rebel force and political movement intent on bringing about the reformed unity of the whole Sudan. A story of transformation and of victory against the odds, this book reviews South Sudan’s modern history as a contested region and assesses the political, social and security dynamics that will shape its immediate future as Africa’s newest independent state.
About the Author
Matthew LeRiche is a Fellow in Managing Humanitarianism at LSE. He will be launching his book in Kenya which will be prefaced by a few words on the importance of South Sudan to both academicians and practitioners followed by an exposition of the book.
An interlocutory session with the audience will follow thereafter and copies of the book will be available for sale.

Following discussions at iHub in late August and the Storymoja Hay Festival in mid-September, Kwani Trust will hold an event on Friday 28th September, 2012 from 10 – 11am at the 15th Nairobi International Book Fair at Sarit Centre, Nairobi.

To understand events like the 2007-08 post-election violence in Kenya one needs to go back in history.
This effort requires the following of the Kenyan State from the colonial but most importantly from its post-colonial trajectory. This is the focus of Charles Hornsby’s latest book, “Kenya: a history since independence.” Traversing key features of the Kenya post-colony, Hornsby looks at issues such as the politics of redistribution, the saliency of ethnicity and the operation of corruption in Kenya since independence.
The book offers fresh evidence and as such new insights on Kenya’s post-colonial history and will surely remain a widely referenced title in years to come.
The launch will be accompanied by a short discussion on the debates that the book tries to raise or tackle.
Copies of the book will be on sale and Hornsby will gladly be present to autograph sold copies as well.

Rethinking Eastern African Literary and Intellectual Landscapes
An Anthology edited by Prof. James Ogude, Dr. Grace A. Musila and Dr. Dina Ligaga
This book brings together diverse voices, genres and intellectual trajectories in an attempt to reflect on the state of production of, and engagement with, Eastern African literary cultures. The book re-visits established intellectual debates and canonical texts, while simultaneously offering a forceful engagement with popular arts and performance; particularly the manner in which genres such as drama, music and new media offer important insights into everyday life in the region. At the core of these essays is Eastern Africa s engagement with the legacy of colonial modernity, which remains a major influence on the region’s artists. The book also speaks to rich and complex sources of Eastern African cultures and how these continue to be negotiated through multiple currents, both local and transnational.

Somalia is not well known or understood. The images that come from there are one-sided and mostly filled with gloom, violence and suffering.
Fatima Jibrell, a Somali environmentalist, and James Lindsay, a retired diplomat, have both been working closely with the rural communities of Northern Somalia to conserve the environment and improve the standards of living of the rural populations there. But more importantly, they have been able to project to the outside world an image of Northern Somalia as a place of great diversity and serenity. They have published a photographic documentation entitledPeace and Milk: Scenes from Northern Somalia.
Peace and Milk reveals the beauty and variety of the Somali landscape and the communities of Northern Somalia. Informative captions tell the stories behind the photographs and provide an insight into how ordinary Somalis live.
The book launch will be in the form of a moderated panel discussion with the authors and a Q & A session with the audience.
