Femmenicity is an event that focuses on redefining the woman’s role in the Hip Hop culture. It aims at creating unity within women in Hip Hop by providing a platform to showcase their talent; be it poetry, DJ-ing, fashion, dance, rap skills or entertainment business.

The event will make sure women in Hip Hop have a strong sense of self identity and empowerment. It will help develop and provide women with positive roles that are present and represented within the Hip Hop industry. In other countries, female rappers and poets have made their mark and gained considerable recognition; but in East Africa and especially in Kenya, women lack the support they require, hence they neglect their talent.

Femmenicity brings together the Hip Hop ladies, such as Lness, Kadah, Tamic, Sugar, Faith Nancy, Xtatic, The Magicianz and many more, to share the love for Hip Hop and the element each represents. It is time to stand up, take notice and give props to those women who have left their mark on Hip Hop culture.

There will also be the opportunity to be part of an open Mic session. If you want to perform please send an email to: agynem@yahoo.com

Short biographies:

David Sasha Tonn
David has taught and performed tango around the world for more than ten years. He studied under numerous Traditional and Nuevo masters and has performed at festivals with some of the most respected followers. He believes in the seamless integration of Traditional and Nuevo technique coupled with imagination and musicality. He incorporates his expertise as a yoga instructor and martial artist in helping you discover the deep connections possible between a leader and follower through understanding both the individual and shared axes required of tango.

Tatiana Smirnova
Tatiana’s creativity developed from her childhood in Moscow. Enrolled in an Olympic gymnastics program she studied with a master of Russian rhythmic gymnastics and ballet. In parallel, she began her study of piano and musicality. She continues her studies of music, ballet, ballroom and modern dance basics to this day. She furthered her knowledge of the human body with intense study of the art of Tae Kwon Do, Hapkido, and yoga. When she arrived to New York to pursue her graduate studies in biomedical research, she discovered her passion for Argentine tango. She has studied with such masters as Mariela Sametband, Moira Castellano, Gaston Torelli, Dana Frigoli, Ezequiel Farfaro, Murat and Michelle Erdemsel.

TEDxBraeburnSchools, Jul 2 2011 @ Braeburn School (Gitanga Rd)

Why TED Talks? We need to intelligently reassess our systems of societal structure, education, and cultural narratives, and creatively think about the roles of morality, technology, human behaviour and collaborative civil society in our world. This event creates a space for open, exploratory dialogue to understand these issues, to ensure the diversity of our people and their thoughts are a source of intelligent constructive creativity rather than conflict.

At 10 for 10.30 to 12

Theme: The Internet in Society: Empowering or Censoring Citizens?

Beware of the online “filter bubbles”
As web companies strive to tailor their services (including news and search results) to our personal tastes, there’s a dangerous unintended consequence: We get trapped in a “filter bubble” and don’t get exposed to information that could challenge or broaden our worldview. Eli Pariser argues powerfully that this will ultimately prove to be bad for us and bad for democracy.

Does the internet actually inhibit, not encourage democracy? In this new RSA Animate adapted from a talk at the RSA, Evgeny Morozov presents an alternative take on ‘cyber-utopianism’ – the seductive idea that the internet plays a largely empancipatory role in global politics.
Exposing some idealistic myths about freedom and technology (during Iran’s ‘twitter revolution’ fewer than 20,000 Twitter users actually took part), Evgeny argues for some realism about the actual uses and abuses of the internet.

Book Launch – Fresh Paint: Literary Vignettes by Kenyan Women *

* WHERE: GOETHE-INSTITUT, Maendeleo House, Monrovia Street,Nairobi
* WHEN: Wednesday 29th June 2011 – 6 PM
* ENTRY: FREE

This anthology of poems and short stories is the culmination of a joint literary project by AMKA – Space for Women’s Creativity – and Goethe-Institut Kenya.
For over 3 years, a literature forum has been held in the library of the Goethe-Institut on the last Saturday of every month. Over this time the participants wrote poems and short stories, which were then read or performed, and subsequently discussed and critiqued by their peers and invited literature professors and established writers. This provided an opportunity for the young writers to improve their skills and become better producers of the written word.
This anthology is the first collection of a selection of writings presented by the young writers and discussed during more than 30 literature forums. AMKA and Goethe-Institut are proud to officially launch this collection of hitherto unpublished works. Some of the writers will read and perform their own pieces during the launch.
The launch will be in the form of a moderated panel discussion with the following panelists: Anna Mwangi, Elizabeth Orchardson-Mazrui, Mshai Mwangola and Tom Odhiambo (Moderator).
