Femmenicity is an event that focuses on redefining the woman’s role in the Hip Hop culture. It aims at creating unity within women in Hip Hop by providing a platform to showcase their talent; be it poetry, DJ-ing, fashion, dance, rap skills or entertainment business.

The event will make sure women in Hip Hop have a strong sense of self identity and empowerment. It will help develop and provide women with positive roles that are present and represented within the Hip Hop industry. In other countries, female rappers and poets have made their mark and gained considerable recognition; but in East Africa and especially in Kenya, women lack the support they require, hence they neglect their talent.

Femmenicity brings together the Hip Hop ladies, such as Lness, Kadah, Tamic, Sugar, Faith Nancy, Xtatic, The Magicianz and many more, to share the love for Hip Hop and the element each represents. It is time to stand up, take notice and give props to those women who have left their mark on Hip Hop culture.

Charity: Couture & Culture’s Lifestyle Gala, Jun 24 2011 @ Lord Erroll Restaurant

Couture & Culture will be hosting a lifestyle gala at the Lord Erroll restaurant on Friday June 24th.
Proceeds from event ticket sales will go towards purchasing sanitary towels for the children at Tumaini Children’s Home.

Fair: Soko Soko: Jun. 4/5 2011 @ New Muthaiga Shopping Mall

This is an annual charity craft fair with over 70 stands this year. It has now found a new home at the New Muthaiga shopping mall on Thigiri Ridge Road.

Last year’s proceeds, of Ksh 1 million, made it possible for Soko Soko to supply 60 desks and chairs to the Vendramini Education Centre in Kahawa West. In addition it was possible to build a new classroom block, consisting of 4 classrooms which also doubles as a hall, at the Jambo Toto informal school in the Korongocho Slums.

Come find some of the best designers Kenya has to offer making bags, sandals home decor and art.

This month Sarakasi Trust in conjunction with Norwegian Embassy and the US Embassy invites the public to Kamukunji Open Grounds on March 26th 2011 to enjoy and appreciate the efforts of Kibera youth in the fight against tribalism, drug abuse, violence among others during this special event dubbed Amani Lazima meets WaPi in Kibera. (ENTRANCE FREE,AMPLE SECURITY PROVIDED)

Back ground-AMANI LAZIMA: Sarakasi Trust in conjunction with the Norwegian Embassy is hosting peace events dubbed Lazima (Peace Now!) which are monthly events from December 2010 till November 2011 in some of the major slums in Nairobi. So far we have successfully covered Korogocho, Mathare and Kangemi respectively.
WaPi- (Words And Pictures) is a British Council platform for poets, fashion designers, MCs, dancers, graffiti writers, animators, cartoonists, comic book artists, artists, painters, singers, acrobats or any other sort of visual or verbal artist to showcase their art through monthly WAPI events.

WOPPOW is a project by the artist collectiveUBERMORGEN.COM that has produced some of the most provocative artworks of recent years in the global art world, laying bare uncomfortable issues of our societies with absurd and ironical means. Their new project, in cooperation with Goethe-Institut Nairobi, focuses on one of the most covered but maybe less understood phenomena of today: Somali pirates. It provocatively interprets Somali piracy as a method to react to the exploitation of society: as re-appropriation by means of theft and robbery.

Ubermorgen.com looks at the big picture through a small video-camera, portraying the pirate’s phenomenon and its tribal expansion. As a meta-layer they use fashion and technology to talk about political, social and economic issues. The research findings, as abstract and absurd as they may come, will be on display in this tight and tense exhibition at the Goethe-Institut Nairobi.
