The Embassy of Spain in Nairobi is happy to invite you to the following;

Artist talk with Irene Izquierdo, who will present her latest work: “The potential of art in context. Exploring ideas of identity and alternative commemoration in Nairobi”.

In this event, programmed in the framework of the Hispanic-Kenyan Cultural Forum, Izquierdo will also explain her artist practice, with which she tries to alter and question the accepted normality of our everyday actions, environments and perceived identities.

At the same time, one of the collaborators of Izquierdo’s work in Nairobi, the young Kenyan music group will offer a small performance of their songs composed for this occasion.

Dr. Najma Dharani holds a PhD degree in Plant and Environmental Ecology, and is currently a lecturer in the Dept. of Environmental Science at Kenyatta University.
She is also the author & photographer of Field guide to common Trees and Shrubs in East Africa and Field guide to Acacias of East Africa

She will also Launch her New book called ‘Common Antimalarial trees and Shrubs of East Africa’

The Taste of Nairobi Festival is a brain child of the Ministry of Nairobi Metropolitan Development in partnership with other stakeholders.
They have come up with a yearly, social, cultural and business event that is envisaged to rival other famous festivals in the world such as Oktoberfest in Germany, the Samba Festival in Brazil, Carthage Festival in Tunisia, and The Taste of Chicago Festival in USA among others, which are attended by millions of locals and foreign tourists.

TEDWomen-Kibera, Dec. 8 2010 @ Nailab

TEDWomen-Kibera will take place on 8th December 2010 at Nailab (Bishop Magua Centre, Ngong’ Road opposite Uchumi Hyper, 4th Floor) from 6:00 PM to 9:30 PM. This event will bring together some of Kenya’s leading policy-makers, community activists, educationalists, healthcare experts, artists but to mention a few. We will have live performances from musician Neema, as well as poetry from Ngwatilo Mawio. Artists Waceera Kareeithi and Ato Malinda will also be displaying their pieces. We will use this opportunity to look into the history of women in Kenya through a live and engaging discussion moderated by Lorna Irungu, who will also be the MC for the night. During the art exhibition and performing arts display attendees will be able to meet and greet phenomenal men and women who are working towards bettering our shared future.

Lecture: Climate change and the dynamics of population replacement during the Late Pleistocene in Europe, Dec 9 2010 @ National Museum

Abstract: The dispersal of modern humans into Europe and the nature of their interactions with Neanderthal populations are still poorly understood processes. It seems likely, given available chronological data, that modern humans first entered Europe from the east about 45,000 years Before Present, travelling westward along the Danube valley and the Mediterranean coast in an initial, colonising phase during which time they may have come into contact with Neanderthal populations. This colonising phase was eventually followed by the disappearance of Neanderthals around 30,000 years B.P. Since the dispersal of modern humans into Europe and the extinction of the Neanderthals coincide with a period of climate instability, the role of climate change in shaping the dynamics of population replacement is hotly debated. Nowhere is this truer than in the Iberian Peninsula, which is emerging as a key region for the study of the dynamics of hominid population replacement. We examine this debate in the light of recent survey work in Portugal.
