Where Books go to Die

Exhibition: Where Books go to Die, Mar. 13 – Apr. 11 2014 @ Goethe Institut

Where Books go to Die
Kuona Trust is delighted to invite you to the opening of WHERE BOOKS GO TO DIE, an exhibition by one of our artists, Jackie Karuti, opening on 13th March at the Goethe Institut, Nairobi.

The exhibition replicates a library scene set in a dystopia world inspired by the four elements Earth, Air, Fire & Water. These four elements are believed to be the forces that govern existence for they hold immense power to not only build but also destroy. The symbolism of the elements is translated into a series of smaller installations that depict the state of most libraries as seen in Nairobi as well as in most parts of the world.

About the Artist
Jackie Karuti is a visual artist working in the fields of painting, performance art and installation. Her paintings depict a world of opposites set within a black and yellow palette. With her gradual embrace of new media and immateriality, Jackie has incorporated a conceptual and experimental artistic approach to her work through her performance pieces and installations which collectively focus on themes such asgender, identity and urban culture. Jackie has exhibited and participated in workshops in Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa and the USA. She also writes and has collaborated in various photography projects.

Her studio is based at Kuona Trust in Nairobi. You can find more of her musings on her blog

Opening night: Thursday, 13th March 2014 from 7pm

Exhibition of new works by Mary Ogembo

About
Mary Ogembo‘s work is inspired by the African woman. She depicts the beauty and daily activities of the woman, and overlooks the negative stereotype placed on the African woman.

Her paintings are very rich with vibrant Earth colors, usually associated with Africa and the background pretty much relates to the subject and brings about the state of the environment. Her subject forms are exaggerated in some areas, which give the paintings a naive look.

Mary Ogembo’s paintings have been collected by The National Art Gallery of Zimbabwe in Bulawayo, The Standard Chartered Bank UK and Casoria museum in Naples Italy.
She has also held successful exhibitions outside Kenya in the following countries; France, USA, Egypt, Canada, Finland, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Tanzania, Zambia, India, Germany and Lithuania.

About

This acclaimed documentary series ‘Africa(s), History of a Continent’ relives the last hundred years of Africa’s history in the voices of African personalities who in one way or another participated in the continent’s reawakening and its entry into the 21st century.
The series has been constructed from interviews with leading African personalities and from unique and previously unseen archival footage. The documentaries take the viewers back into the past of a forgotten continent, from the upheaval of the colonial era to the great experiments with democracy and African unity, passing through the ferment of independence movements and civil wars, the turmoil of crisis and cultural renewal. History of the continent told from an African point of view.

In the words of the Nigerian novelist Chinua Achebe: “Until the lions have their own historians, the history of the hunt will always glorify the hunter…

Exhibition Dates: Until October 18, 2013

About
The exhibition series Sasa Nairobi is the basis of our work in the field of contemporary art. Since 2008, Goethe Institut Nairobi has exhibited more than 30 artists, the last being a performance by Jackie the 3rd.

They continue this series with William Wambugu, a young emerging artist who uses drawing and sketch as medium. William was trained at an art and design school and attended workshops where he forged his strong individual style. In his work he explores his personal world and perceptions and deducts out of each detail a universal comprehension of the world he is living in.

According to the exhibition’s curator Samantha Ripa di Meana, William is a meticulous observer who is inspired by people and circumstances, but more precisely by objects that surround him. She describes his images as delicate and simple which at the same time have strength and great creativity.

For the first time in his career, William is creating an installation merging all the works he has produced up to now. This exhibition presents for the first time a variety of his self-made scrap books. William uses all kinds of print products that he gets hold of on which he attaches newspaper articles, adverts, drawings and paintings that add a new meaning to the original book.

Presented in the way the street book vendors trade their goods, “William gives to the audience his personal view and perception like a kaleidoscope of humankind” says Samantha.
