About
Intellectual Property (IP) – creations of the mind: inventions; literary and artistic works; and symbols, names and images used in commerce – could either be industrial property or copyright. Kenya is signatory to a number of intellectual property conventions. However IP awareness and protection remains a challenge.

This Science Café will shed light on IP rights and create networking opportunities for researchers and entrepreneurs in order to enhance knowledge transfer and development.

Book Launch & Photo Exhibition: Everyday Africa, May 10-28 2017 @ Alliance Française

Opening: May 10, 2017
Venue: Alliance Française
Time: 6.30 pm

Until: May 28, 2017

EVERYDAY AFRICA
Everyday Africa is a collective of 30 photographers sharing images of daily life (in many forms and from across the continent) on a shared Instagram feed in an effort to transcend the usual clichés that depict Africa as a place of only poverty, disease, and war. The project began in 2012 and has since sparked a global movement – there are dozens of “Everyday” projects focused on broadening our understanding of cities, countries, regions, and continents worldwide.

This exhibition is organized on the occasion of the African Launch of their new book ‘Everyday Africa: 30 Photographers Re-Picturing a Continent’.

At the launch, a theatrical performance will bring to life this social media project, using the comments and conversations sparked by the photography on Instagram as source for the script.

The featured photographers are: Nana Kofi Acquah, Jana Asenbrennerová, Girma Berta, Guillaume Bonn, Barry Christianson, Daouda Corera, Peter DiCampo, Edward Echwalu, Laura El-Tantawy, Yagazie Emezi, Andrew Esiebo, Malin Fezehai, Glenna Gordon, Jane Hahn, Idil Ibrahim, Mahmoud Khattab, Lindsay Mackenzie, Austin Merrill, Holly Pickett, Whitney Richardson, Christina Rizk, Tom Saater, Sameer Satchu, Allison Shelley, Charlie Shoemaker, Ricci Shryock, Nichole Sobecki, Sara Terry, Ley Uwera, Shannon Jensen Wedgwoodstage.

Democracy my piss

Exhibition: Democracy My Piss, Apr. 28 – May 26 2016 @ Kuona Trust

Democracy my piss
Opening: April 28, 2016
Venue: Kuona Trust
Time: 6 pm

Exhibition Runs Until: May 28, 2016

About
This is an art project and exhibition looking at democracy in Africa, taking common observations of political elections in Africa as a starting point.

Often ‘democracy’ in Africa is established by the cycle: Queue – Voting – Dispute/Violence/Compromise – Long years between elections – Stasis – Queue. African politics feature accounts of unconstitutional extension of presidential terms, manipulation of electoral laws, party hopping, patronage and violence, and very rare nominal transitions when an incumbent is out-voted.

On the other end are ordinary people who are subjects to these politics being positioned as bit-players, pawns, the supporting cast to a centralized system of influential men and women but still they queue in millions to vote. Are they exercising a right denied for too long? Is there a need to make a mark even though that mark is mostly ignored? Is democracy an experiment? Is Africa defining its own kind of democracy?
