About

2022 marks the 400th anniversary of Molière’s birth. Molière (Jean Baptiste Poquelin) is one of the greatest comic geniuses the world has seen, and undoubtedly the master of “social comedy. His plays have transcended the times and the society for which they were written, and remain as relevant today. His critical insights into human nature have gained him a lasting reputation as dramatist and satirist.

The Alliance Française has invited the Nairobi Performing Arts Studio to produce a Kenyan adaptation of Molière’s comedy of manners ‘L’Avare’ with a stellar cast including Sam Psenjen (Mission to Rescue), Angel Waruinge (Tahidi High) and Dru Muthure (Radio presenter), directed by Stuart Nash behind the hits ‘Sarafina’, ‘I will marry when I want’…

Don’t miss this Kenyan take on Molière’s comedy ‘L’Avare’. How to get a Mubaba? A critical look at the failings and foibles of human nature in our society and the peculiar behaviour of Kenyans.

Dates: Until July 31, 2021

Venue: Alliance Française Nairobi

About

Explore Nairobi through he eyes of four commuters as they walk, bicycle, ride boda bodas, take matatus, and hire Ubers around Nairobi. Will we ever see the end of the Nairobi traffic gridlock?  Did you know that peak-hour commuters in Nairobi spend an average of 320 hours a year in traffic?  The equivalent of more than 13 days.

The exhibition has been produced by the Civic Data Design Lab (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) which works with data to understand it for public good. The Lab seeks to develop alternative practices which can make the work they do with data and images richer, smarter, more relevant, and more responsive to the needs and interests of citizens traditionally on the margins of policy development.

Thandiwe Muriu
Thandiwe’s Camo series is a vivid and playful display inspired by African fabric. The Camo Series is derived from the word camouflage and refers to how easily we can hide / loose our identity and sense of self in our culture. Camo is a visual celebration of the unique beauty of the African woman.

Exhibition: Photographs by Paul Kariuki Munene (Quaint Photography), Oct. 8-31 2020 @ Alliance Française

Dates: October 8-31, 2020

Venue: Alliance Française

The ubiquitous Paul Kariuki Munene, impossible to miss at concerts around Nairobi, presents a selection of thirty black and white photos of live music events at the Alliance Française.

Were it not for Paul, Nairobi would not have an archive of music events.  We applaud the photographer’s dedication to documenting Nairobi’s evolving live concerts’ scene over the last ten years.  These photos are published regularly on his Facebook page, ‘Quaint Photography’.

Paul’s fascination for black and white photography goes back to his childhood.  He loved the cool black and white photos of his parents’ wedding and those 1960s black and white studio portraits.

Having started with a point and shoot camera on a visit to Lamu in 2004, Paul has gradually mastered his craft and graduated to the latest digital technology.  Paul is a freelance photographer and works with PR companies, brands, and development agencies.
