About
Sacred Groves is the debut album of Nairobi-based producer DJ Raph. It is a gem of a record: Considered, emotional and contagious. Sacred Groves opens up a timeless musical universe that is both ancient and futuristic; a deep melange of modern electronic bass music, African chants and traditional rhythms. It was released by Noland, Berlin and produced within the context of the curatorial project Mashup the Archive.

Mashup the Archive was a project of the Iwalewahaus, University of Bayreuth, Germany, dedicated to activating and making visible the extensive archive of African art that has been collected over the last thirty years. Working with Sam Hopkins as guest curator, young African artists-in-residence and a series of mini-festivals, the project explored accessible ways for new audiences to experience this rich cultural heritage.

Based on weeks of research in the extensive music archive, DJ Raph’s album fuses traditional and contemporary elements to create a sacred sound. His set will be embedded within other musical talent from Nairobi and followed by a set by Noland labelheads Gebrüder Teichmann from Berlin.

In cooperation with the Goethe-Institute Nairobi, elctronic duo Gebrüder Teichmann put together the initial projects in BLNRB & TEN CITIES. Since 2015 the brothers run NOLAND as a label and platform for electronic music with a transcultural aproach.
It grows from their deep roots in the underground and DIY-culture of the 90s and has been nurtured by recent fertile intercultural projects and collaborations. The Sacred Groves record release party, will be their first appearance back in Nairobi after 7 years.

About
TEN CITIES is a music and research project that brings together musicians and writers from ten cities in Africa and Europe. The project initiates music production and details them unwritten history of club culture in Cairo, Johannesburg, Luanda, Lagos and Nairobi as well as in Berlin, Bristol, Kyiv, Lisbon and Naples. TEN CITIES is a process, focusing on creating and producing, carried forward by travels and visits. During this process, the project aims at creating networks that are open and involve more and more participants. Although the cooperations between each African and European cities are set, GI Nairobi thought why not to break it up once and open up further networks.

Hence they are inviting the renowned British DJ/producer Rob Smith from Bristol and Dirty Paraffin’s Okmalumkoolkat from Johannesburg to Nairobi! Rob Smith is one of the veterans of the Drum & Bass/Jungle sound in Europe and has been of huge influence both as DJ and with his band Smith & Mighty. He is currently on the Grand Central Records independent record label, playing Breakbeat Hip Hop, Dub and Reggae-influenced music.

Okmalumkoolkat is one half of South Africa’s up and coming music duo, Dirty Paraffin. Their lyrically witty and clever primer stove music is making waves on the local and international music scene. Some call their music electronic-kwaito, other call it trap, but they prefer to not to put their music in a box.

Together with some local DJs they will get you rocking during a bash on the street in front of the Goethe-Institut.

Party/DJ-Set: TEN CITIES Pop-Up Club, Apr. 19 2013 @ Restaurant Petra

Venue: Maendeleo House

Whether it’s Nairobi or Naples, Bristol or Johannesburg: in all the major cities of Africa and Europe, people get together in dedicated spaces to dance to music and party – and form communities and subcultures. Club culture is a global phenomenon, but what kind of music are people dancing to? What sort of public sphere do club cultures create? And what happens when the club music from two different continents meets head on?

Over the last few years we have organised quite a number of projects that go beyond Kenya, but TEN CITIES is our biggest endeavor so far. It is a music and research project that brings together musicians and writers from ten cities in Africa and Europe. The project initiates music production and details the unwritten history of club culture in Cairo, Johannesburg, Luanda, Lagos and Nairobi as well as in Berlin, Bristol, Kiev, Lisbon and Naples.

To start the project off in Nairobi, we are setting up a club at an special location. For one night only, we transform an actual restaurant into a great party place by adding a distinct clubbing atmosphere to the interior.
Blinky Bill and DJ Raph will spin and play some hot tunes to join us all in!
