Amnesty International, Xavier Project and Pawa254 warmly invite you to the opening of I Define Me on Wednesday 28 January at 6pm.
RSVP to amina.hersi[at]amnesty[dot]org by Monday 26 January if you’d like to attend.
About
I Define Me challenges the labels imposed on Somali refugees in Kenya. In a context of xenophobia, prejudice and assumptions, I Define Me creates a space for participants to share their experience and define how they identify themselves.
Photographer Armstrong Too, found innovative ways to capture the participants’ identities without revealing their faces. Many of the images show participants holding an object that represents their occupation, what they sell to make a living, an interest, something important to them – a football, clothes, sim sim, books.
Viewers are invited to respond to the exhibition by reflecting on how they define themselves and how they feel about identities that are imposed on them.
