In its second year of merging different artists from across Africa and Germany on one stage, the highly successful Artistic Encounters series kicks off with Kenyan/Eritrean actress Hana Kefela’s adaptation of Sierra Leonean writer Pede Hollist’s novel, So The Path Does Not Die. The performance and discussion will be moderated by James Murua.

On the 9 May, the European Union celebrates Europe Day. This year’s European Film Festival screenings on the 9 May are also looking at giving an insight into both the EU’s foreign policy and how globalisation impacts European countries more broadly.

The highlight of the evening will be the screening of a recent documentary by Annalisa Piras ‘Europe at Sea’ at 6:45 PM. Piras followed the EU’s chief diplomat, Federica Mogherini for two years, documenting her quest to implement a new foreign policy agenda: the EU Global Strategy.

Our session on 28 March 2018 will be dealing with the connection between education and the market. How is the education system trying to make sure that its graduates are well prepared to enter the labour force? Are we doing enough to encourage young people to choose courses that are in high demand by the market? Is the professional education system geared towards providing the best possible education, even if it isn’t in an academic field? And how does the German dual education system earn its reputation of producing highly skilled trained workers?

Can we value what we don’t know? Is it possible to experience that which we cannot perceive? Can we then touch the soul of the unknown, can we make contact with it, could we listen to it? Can we feel the texture of the unknown? How does it move? From what direction does the unknown come from and to which direction does it go? Can we describe the unknown as still? Is it silent or is there sound and resonance? Is the unknown within time or is time within the unknown? To what extent does what we know contribute to the experience of the unknown?

Of happenings and experiences from the past, present and future, Unknown is an investigative journey through the experiences and places unknown and therefore deemed unperceivable but felt, can be proved, imagined and accepted as fact. The performance was developed by dancer and choreographer Adam Chienjo during a residence programme in Scotland and involves experimental dance and mixed media. It is accompanied by music that was composed specifically for this project by Ronnie Goodman and a video work by Raymond Ndikwe.
