Discussion: Media and Diverse Politics in Kenya, Apr. 13 2011 @ Goethe

Date: April 13, 2011
Venue: Goethe-Institut Auditorium
Time: 6-9pm
Entry: Free

Without doubt, political temperatures are rising as the elite jostle for power, and political heat is likely to rise all the way to the 2012 elections. Oblivious of what the electorate really want, our politicians have started beating the drums, and the stage is being set in earnest for a drama that will keep us in sweat and tears. Citizens look up to the media for unbiased information and interpretation of the political events in the country.

Are citizens’ expectations of the media unrealistic and misguided? How should the media manage the process of reporting political wrangles without driving the country into an early election mood; without sidelining other important stories in the country? This open discussion forum will bring together media scholars, journalists and political scientists to explore the role in media.

This discourse is organized by Twaweza Communications in collaboration with Ford Foundation.

Concert: Muziki wa Kenya, Mar. 19 2011 @ Goethe

Date: March 19, 2011
Venue: Goethe Institut Auditorium
Time: 6pm
Entry: Free

Ayub Ogada, a world music legend, has been performing since the late 1970s, and is arguably the best known Kenyan musician internationally. Born in Mombasa to Luo parents, he was educated in the US and in Kenya. He spent his career as a musician in Kenya, then 20 years in London, before coming back to Kenya in 2008.

As a master of the 8-stringed lyre Nyatiti, complemented by his unique voice, Ayub Ogada caused a sensation in world music. He released several albums, the most famous being En Mana Kuoyo which was recorded by Peter Gabriel’s Record Label Real World. Ogada has had his songs featured in a number of prominent feature films such as Buffalo Soldiers, I Dreamed of Africa, and The Constant Gardener.

After his return from the UK, Ayub Ogada has concentrated mainly on developing talents in Kenya. On this evening, Ogada gives a rare solo concert – which is only the 2nd live concert after his return to Kenya – performing his own music: It will simply be his voice, percussions and the trancelike Nyatiti.
