Synopsis
Komaki NAGAI, 31, was raised in the working-class Kyojima area of Tokyo. She has had enough of her good-for-nothing younger husband, Noritomo, and takes her daughter, Noriko, aka ‘Nonchan,’ back to live with her mother at the Kyojima home that she was raised in. Komaki doesn’t want to become a burden to her mother, Fumiyo, so looks for a job. But there are few employment opportunities for an over-30 single mother with no qualifications and no experience. She accepts a part-time job for the time being, and re-encounters her former senior high school classmate, Tateo. Komaki is developing a passion for Tateo, who takes her to a small tavern called “Totoya.” There, she tastes the ‘mackerel in miso’ and is astonished. She is completely enraptured by the taste, and becomes determined to open the “ultimate cheap but tasty box lunch shop.” She enlists the assistance of “Totoya,” but then…

Every year, the Japan Information and Culture Centre (JICC) and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Nairobi Centre (JSPS) hold a symposium at the Embassy of Japan.

This year, the symposium is titled The Second Maasai Olympic — Competition for Wildlife Conservation?. To discuss this issue, they have invited Dr. Toshio Meguro (Tokyo University of Foreign Studies), Mr. Lekishon Kenana (Kenya Wildlife Service), Mr. Salaton Tome (Wildlife and environment conservation, Maasai Mara University) and Mr. Sontika Melok, a leader of Maasai youth as panelists.

The symposium will be held on Friday, March 06, 2015 from 1:30pm to 4:00pm at the Multi-Purpose Hall of the Japan Information & Culture Centre at the Embassy of Japan (Mara Road, Upper Hill).

Synopsis:
Set in a working class district of Tokyo in 1958, the year when Tokyo Tower was built. Norifumi (Tsutsumi Shinichi) runs a garage in Yuuhi-machi 3-chome. A woman named Mutsuko comes to the garage to work, but she is disappointed to find that it is such a small place. Norifumi’s son, Ippei, cheers her up by telling her that they are getting a TV at home soon. Meanwhile, the owner of the Sweet Shop opposite the garage, Chagawa (Yoshioka Hidetaka) drunkenly agrees to look after a boy named Junnosuke. Yuuhi-machi 3-chome welcomes the two new inhabitants. Everyone is in a festive mood with the coming of TV, Christmas and other happy news. The years roll by, then Junnosuke’s father turns up in town. There is already a strong bond between Chagawa and Junnosuke, but Chagawa, thinking about the boy’s future, sends him off with his father.

The Dolls of Japan
The Embassy of Japan and the National Museums of Kenya invites you to the Japanese Dolls Exhibition titled The Dolls of Japan: Shapes of Prayer, Embodiments of Love.

This exhibition introduces Japan’s representative dolls, including Hina ningyo (Girls’ Festival dolls) and Gogatsu ningyo (Boys’ Day dolls), which have their origins in ancient customs; dolls connected to traditional performing arts like noh, bunraku and kabuki; regional dolls from throughout the country; and “creative dolls” produced by contemporary craftspeople.

The Japan Information & Culture Centre would like to invite you for the 2014 Japanese Cultural Festival which will be held on Saturday, 1st November 2014.
The details of the Festival are as follows:

Synopsis
HIROSHIMA in the early summer of 1945, was a city, like many other Japanese cities, surviving the ravages of war. The tower of Hiroshima castle rises to the blue sky.

NAKAOKA GEN is a normal, active young boy, who is a second grader in the local elementary school, and is living with his parents, an older sister, EIKO, and his younger brother, SHINJI. Although poor, they are living as well as they can, by supporting each other. GEN’s father, DAIKICHI, is critical about the war and always tells his children that they must live strongly, like wheat plants which grow even though they are trodden. His pregnant mother, KIMIE, although very hungry herself, gives up her sweet potato, because her children are begging for food. GEN is proud of his family and is looking forward to seeing the new baby who is expected to be born soon.

On August 6th, carrying atomic bombs, the U.S. bomber Enola Gay takes off from Tinian Base and sets a course towards KYUSHU. Because of the cloud cover, the original target city of KOKURA is spared, but Hiroshima is chosen as the alternative.

This story reveals not only the tragedy and the fear of the A-bomb victims, but also how the boy named GEN survived the desperate times, without a loss of faith in humanity, and without bitterness.
