Pieces of Fortune Poster

Exhibition: Pieces of Fortune – Celebrating Art’s Modernity, Aug. 25-Sept. 2 2013 @ Michael Joseph Centre

Pieces of Fortune Poster
Edward Manyonge’s debut exhibition “Pieces of Fortune” is opening at The Michael Joseph Centre, Safaricom House on Sunday afternoon 25th August starting 3–5 pm and will feature surprise artists in an acoustic performance. “Pieces of Fortune” celebrates the freedom provided by modern aspects of art and its collection is a touch of contemporary designs with some depicting architectural aspects while providing a minimalistic yet valiant feel to Edward’s paintings, most of which are acrylic on canvas.

Painter Edward’s bold and colorful works champion both figurative and abstract mediums that enthrall into an inward journey into his world. His style portrays vivid images and patterns painted “from the inside out” as he puts it, so as to allow for the present moment to inform the process of creation with an intention to feed heart and soul and instill a sense of peace and joy.

Edward started “playing with colors” while still as young as five years old. He would later emerge Second Best in Kenya in a national competition on painting sponsored by Kiwi at 12 years old.
His works have previously been exhibited at joint exhibitions including at Alliance Française and at Braeburn Garden Estate. After studying Art, Design and Photography at the Buru Buru Fine Arts, Edward is now Braeburn Garden Estate High School’s Graphic Designer and enjoys painting at any given free time.

“Pieces of Fortune” exhibition has been supported by Michael Joseph Centre and opens for public viewing from Monday 25th August till 2nd September 2013. Surprise guests will grace the exhibition’s opening in an acoustic performance, after which Edward will give the guests a brief welcoming note.

Sounds of the heart Poster-sm

Thursday 11th April 2013 sees musicians from Nairobi School (Old and New) on one stage at the Michael Joseph Centre. The concert, apart from being a wonderful evening of music-making, is aimed at raising awareness of how important music is in the government school curriculum. You’ll be surprised at how many fantastic Kenyan musicians have come out of the Kenyan government school system. The evening includes the following groups.

THE MORANS

‘The Morans’ are a brass group consisting of players ranging from University lecturers, Music teachers and Music students. The group was formed about a year ago and plays a wide range of musical styles ranging from works from the Renaissance Period to present day works. Members of this group are also involved in other musical groups such as the ‘Nairobi Orchestra’, ‘The National Youth Orchestra of Kenya’ (KNYO) and ‘The OCs’. Some of them also teach in Nairobi’s Korogocho slums under the Ghetto Classics programme run by the Art of Music Foundation.

THE OCs

‘The OCs’ are members of the Old Cambrian Society (Kenya). This society is the alumni organization for Nairobi School. ‘The OCs’ consists of alumni from the school, ranging between 1978 up to class of 2012. Group members are committed to raising Music Education standard at the school. Several of them volunteer their time and resources in teaching the current students. They are also involved in other musical groups such as the ‘Nairobi Orchestra’, ‘The National Youth Orchestra of Kenya’ (KNYO) and ‘The Morans’. Some of them also teach in Nairobi’s Korogocho slums under the Ghetto Classics programme run by the Art of Music Foundation. This group is a few months old and hopes to keep growing as more students graduate from the school.

ZEZE-  Nairobi’s Premier String Chamber ensemble.
