In 2015 UNHCR launched the ‘Artists for Refugees’ initiative to promote and nurture musical and artistic talent and ability among refugees and asylum seekers in Kenya. The project aims to empower refugee artists, by providing skills training to promote self-reliance, with the hope of giving refugees an opportunity to derive a living from their talents. To date more than 300 refugees have been trained in music and 100 in visual arts.

Join Octopizzo, the lead music artist, and musicians from Kakuma and Dadaab refugee camps and those residing in Nairobi on Sat. 25 November at 4 pm for a music concert highlighting the musical achievements of their work together.

Have you heard of the LuQuLuQu campaign – a home grown solution to Africa’s refugee crisis. Centred on the African philosphy of ‘Ubuntu’ or ‘Ujamaa’, the movement invites people to take ownership of the refugee and displacement problem through simple everyday philanthropic actions to promote self-reliance and independence.

The rainmaker carries hope. It can bring prosperity in times of drought and new life, where for a long time none was. With his music the Berlin Rapper Megaloh has become a kind of rainmaker himself. He brings the hope of a new area of in German Hip Hop. Now his new album “Regenmacher” has been released. He sees Rap as a narrative vehicle but also as a form of art. In October 2017 Megaloh will tour Uganda, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, and Kenya, organized by the Goethe-Institut.

For his performance in Nairobi on 13th October, he will be joined by Kenyan artist Octopizzo.

As part of the project, a theatre workshop will be featured with refugees who live in Nairobi. The workshop will be directed by the Italian artist Olivier Marcal. At the end of this workshop a short performance will be presented that shows its results. Moreover the Kenyan Hip Hop great Octopizzo will perform together with refugees from Kakuma and Dadaab, as well as Nairobi, who are working in the field of music.

#PigaPichaMtoiAsome is an initiative for photographers to use their unique vision to promote slum child education through photography. In this exhibition, photos from the #PigaPichaMtoiAsome initiative will be
showcased to raise awareness about the barriers to education faced by children living in slums and the importance of achieving education for all.
The exhibition will focus on sharing the stories of children currently out of school and living in Kibera and ALL PROCEEDS will go towards sending these children to school. An auction of photographs from the exhibit will be held.
