The Goethe-Institut Nairobi has collaborated with One Fine Day Films and Ginger Ink Films to bring you a one of a kind opportunity.

Facilitated by David Baboulene, a published author of six books including; The Story Book (2010) and the upcoming Primary Colours of Story (2019), scriptwriter, professional story consultant and a Ph.D. scholar of story theory whose research is changing the way contemporary media industries create and evaluate stories.

About
What is a story? Why do stories exist? How do stories work?
Using clips and examples from classics such as Breaking Bad and Back to the Future, David Baboulene explains the key elements that give stories their power and which give you a toolkit for managing that power. Character growth, moral argument, knowledge gaps and subtext, the story world, conflict and key questions are all made plain, followed by an opportunity for Q&A with the story consultant

The sessions will be held in 4 parts as described below:

THE PRIMARY COLOURS OF STORY

Session 1 – The mind and stories
Why do stories exist? How do they work? What even IS a story?!
How story evolved from language and the functions of mind.
How the mind works with narrative, both in real-life experiences and in story.

Session 2 – Subtext and knowledge gaps
The critical and defining role of subtext and knowledge gaps.
Privilege and revelation
Classical forms – Hollywood formula and Aristotle
Examples of classical and anti-structure stories.

Session 3 – Characters, conflict and antagonism
The five critical components of character
Conflict and antagonism – get in touch with your dark side…
Motivation, character growth and the moral argument.

Session 4 – Storification – finding the ultimate power in a story
Fiction, lies, deceit… and truth
Writing backwards – which ending is the ending?
Whose story is it?

Viva con Agua (VcA) is a charitable organisation based in St. Pauli, Hamburg (Germany), campaigning for clean drinking water and human sanitation worldwide. Since its existence VcA together with the United Nations World Food Program ensured access to clean drinking water to more than 500.000 people. Besides the social projects VcA also always tries to initiate links between the people in the project countries and the donors using the universal language of music, art, and football.

During the trip to Kenya the local musicians Octopizzo, Sarabi, and Onejiru will work with Marteria and Maeckes from Germany. The aim of the trip is to create a song together as well as produce a documentary photobook with the journalist Marcus Staiger and the photographer Paul Ripke and a cinematic documentary from the view of a Kenyan director, focusing on the particular approach and method of this social and cultural cooperation.

Treasuring African stories and wanting to enable young talented film-makers to reach a larger amount of viewers, the independent film production company ONE FINE DAY FILMS developed with DW-AKADEMIE and GINGER INK a training workshop concept called One Fine Day Film Workshop. It provides the instruction of amateur film-makers in various departments by professional filmmakers, as well as the realization of a feature film as an on the job training that conveys film making in practice.

During the workshop a chosen group of talented young African film-makers will get in contact with professional film-makers from all over the world who are pleased to share their know-how and knowledge with them.

Synopsis
A young aspiring actor from upcountry Kenya dreams of becoming an accomplished actor one day, and in pursuit of this and the chagrin of his brother and parents, he makes his way to Nairobi the city of opportunity. He quickly understands why Nairobi is nicknamed Nairrobery as he is robbed of all his money and belongings and left alone in a city where he doesn’t know a soul. Luck, or the lack of it, brings him face to face with the city’s criminals and forms a friendship with a small time crook who takes him in. He is quickly drawn into a world of crime as he struggles to pursue his dream of becoming an actor. Keeping the two worlds separate proves to be a challenge for him as he trudges on in this unknown world called Nairobi. This is the story of a young man who despite all odds trudges on in search of his dream. His drive and soft spoken nature are his best resources. His determination is encouraging and he is a true testament that what stands between us and our goals is us.
