Visiting colour theory lecturer from London, Jane de Sausmarez, will give her ‘National Gallery’ lecture at One Off Gallery. Her talk is titled Colour, “Understanding the Deception” and it will last approximately 45 minutes.

One Off is delighted to start the exhibition schedule for the year, with the exhibition ‘Black Angels have Red Wings’ by Ngene Mwaura who currently resides in the United States. The works are a fascinating web of tiny marks, whilst the ‘whole’ carries a powerful message which is firmly rooted in Africa.
Ngene advises that you ‘Step back; there is a panorama of thoughts, ideas, love, and journeys. If you look closely you can hear what I have to say – get closer to what I’m saying. I am just a messenger travelling through uncharted terrain…’

This show will feature an extraordinary range of works including oil on canvas paintings, timber cut outs and mixed media assemblages. Many of the works carry a political message but fans of Ngugi’s animal series will not be disappointed.
Current exhibition of Deqa Abshir’s works continues till Wednesday 22 July 2015.
The year at the gallery starts with ‘The still clock of Lamu’, a mixed show of works produced at the Lamu ‘curfew residency’ which took place last November courtesy of Herbert Menzer.
Participating Kenyan artists are Timothy Brooke, Peter Elungat, Peter Ngugi, Sophie Walbeoffe and visiting sculptor from Germany, Joachim Sauter.

James Mwau is best known in Kenya for his work as a dancer.
In this exhibition he presents extraordinarily intimate photographs of the living spaces of his friends in Kibera.
He will also dance with Kunja Dancers on a number of occasions throughout the day.
Binyavanga Wainaina won the 2002 Caine Prize for African writing. He is the founding editor of Kwani and has taught at Union and Williams College. He is the Director of the Chinua Achebe Centre for African Writers and Artists at Bard College. One of his most recent works is the memoir One day I will write about this place.

Thika is also popular for its delicious grilled pork popularly known as ‘pork choma’. Travelers using Thika Road stop over at the town for this delicacy. There are numerous butcheries in the town selling both uncooked and ready to eat spare ribs. Thika is also a very clean town. Pigs are reared in farms outside the town, they are then slaughtered and brought in as meat. THE ONLY PIGS YOU WILL FIND IN THIKA TOWN ARE DEAD ONES !
This exhibition is not about pigs, it is about people. It is about our society, our politics, the economy. It is about morality and the lack of it, it is about greed and filth and disregard of the rule of law. Impunity and the ‘you should know people ‘attitude. It is about corruption and the selfishness in our society. And most of all, it is about INTELLIGENCE, which surprisingly pigs have!
Just like my town and indeed the country as a whole, my work is in constant change as I seek new ways and techniques of expression. Big crowds of people gathering together for a common goal are reminiscent of the big lines we experienced on March 4th when we voted. Patterns and repeat motifs signify the trend in our politics. A campaign poster with ridiculous manifestoes and promises. A trend in society where men display military style organisation when it comes to their favourite soccer team or their drink. Trends which the international media might regrettably mistake for violence. Hence the need to distinguish between the real and the counterfeit, from the vicious looking crocodiles imported from China and the fish hanging dead in a hangman’s noose to the pig prints on the blankets of Fulilia Hotel, each piece is connected to the other in one way or another. THE PIGS OF THIKA TOWN serve as the start of a new direction in my work.
