“Of Ships Passing in the Night” is an art and photo exhibition which addresses the topic of migration and refuge.

About
Voluntary and forced mass movements have been some of the major phenomena of the last 100 years. Difficult realities and the aspiration towards a better future have compelled human beings to make the dicult decision to move elsewhere. Artists in most societies have created works that address not only the physicality of displacement but also the changes that emerge as a result of migration. Some of these changes are the trauma of forced displacement, the adjustment to new
influences and cultures, the plight of those left behind and the universal desire for holistic progress.

A number of Kenyan artists have interrogated the displacement of mankind in their work. Their approaches to this issue are diverse, ranging from personal and institutional rituals of travel to the anatomy of those trapped in a form of no-man’s land.

This exhibition provides a tiny snippet into some of the artistic engagements around the issue of ‘Migrations and Refugees’ taking place within Kenya. A number of additional practitioners who enrich this exhibition are currently classi ed as refugees. The exhibition has been developed by Peterson Kamwathi, assisted by Thom Ogonga.

Exhibiting Artists: Mugisho Abija, Hassan Abdirahman Barre, Muktar Bashir, Mahet Ecubay, Jackie Karuti, Kivuthi Mbuno, Noor Ali Mudey, Patrick Mukabi, Alpha Mukange Mukangala, Shabu Mwangi, Longinos Nagila, Martin Onyis, Ray Piwi, Michael Soi, Koang Thakiy Stephena, Feleke Gebryes Tariku, Hamwenayo Vivier Tresor and Willy Wambugu.

Photo exhibition
The exhibition uses images from Agence France Presse (AFP), Deutsche Presse-Agentur (DPA) and Kenyan photographers to show the varying experiences of refugees in France, Germany and Kenya. The images show differing attitudes in and approaches by these countries in their eorts to control, embrace and facilitate the lives of refugees. The exhibition has been curated by Carl de Souza (AFP Chief Photographer, East Africa), Kirsten Milhan (Freelance Africa Correspondent, FOCUS-Magazine) and Thomas Mukoya (Kenya Reuters Photographer).

One Off welcomes you to the second show of the year featuring some of the gallery’s best works which have been on loan to the Gallery of African Art at number 9, Cork Street in London for the past year.

The exhibition offers access for collectors to view a curated exhibition which comprises iconic oil paintings by some of Kenya’s biggest names, along with the extraordinary metal cut outs by Patrick Mukabi. These are made from the distressed metal sheets from houses which were burnt in the 2007/8 post election violence.

Margaretta wa Gacheru, Arts correspondent for the Nation Media Group, has been writing about visual and performing arts in Kenya for decades.
She curates an exhibition of Kenyan contemporary artists based on her recent publication Creating Contemporary African Art: Art Networks in Urban Kenya: 1960 – 2010.
The publication is a result of her extensive research for her Ph.D in sociology from the Loyola University Chicago.

There is no better person than Margaretta to bear witness to the exponential growth in the credibility and the creativity of Kenyan visual artists, from the first post-independent art gallery (PaayaPaa) to the current networks of high value Kenyan artists.

In this exhibition, Margaretta brings together a selection of artists from different art networks who have contributed to the evolution of Kenyan visual arts and who continue to display the characteristics of Kenyan entrepreneurial spirit: innovative, adaptable, inventive and original, playing their part in the effervescence of the Kenyan visual arts sector.

About
Mike Kyalo attended Matungulu Boys’ High School in Machakos County. With art not on the school curriculum, Mike formed an art club to pursue his interest which also led to a visit to the GoDown Arts Centre.

Inspired and encouraged by Patrick Mukabi, resident artist at the GoDown Arts Centre, Mike has been mentored by Patrick since leaving school in 2010 and continues to excel at his art. He won the 2012 art competition ‘Experiencing Heritage through Art’ organized by the National Museums of Kenya, and also completed a one month art residency at the Kuona Arts Trust in 2013 courtesy of the Kenya Arts Diary Young Artists Arts Residency.

In this exhibition, Mike presents a series of oil paintings inspired by men at work.

TheLabyrinth art exhibition showcases 50 years of Art in Kenya at the Belgian Residence. More than 130 works of art from 12 artists working in Kenya are displayed to show the exceptional artistic qualities of some of the main actors of the Kenyan cultural scene.

This exhibition is curated by the Belgian Marc Van Rampelberg who has been working for over three decades in Kenya as a curator and a collector.

Labyrinth is open to the public from Saturday November 16 to November 24 onwards from 2 to 6 pm. Access is by registration only. Please send an email with your name and address to Nairobi@diplobel.fed.be!
