The 5-member band Grèn Sémé, led by charismatic poet and singer, Carlo de Sacco, brings its brand of ‘evolutionary maloya’ music to Kenya. Maloya is a form of music, song and dance native to Réunion Island. Of mixed racial origins, maloya was created by Malagasy and African slaves on the sugar plantations and was eventually appropriated by the island’s entire population. Since 2009 Maloya has featured in UNESCO’s very select Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Singing in creole and French, Grèn Sémé’s poetic and meaningful lyrics are set to traditional maloya rhythms blended with world music and electro dub influences. The band has performed in leading Festivals in France including les Francofolies de la Rochelle, Babel Med, la Fiesta des Suds, Le Printemps de Bourges and most recenlty at the Quai Branly Museum in Paris.s
