Dance + Fundaising: MozKen, Dec 16 2011 @ Sarakasi Dome

MOZKEN is an accumulation of the choreographies that Mozambican dance trainer and choreographer Pelina Sitoe  has been teaching Sarakasi Trust’s dancers and acrobats over the past 15 months. The show is dedicated to Kate Kibz’s hospital bill which is over 300,000ksh. Kate, who is one of the Sarakasi and Umoja dancers, was attacked by thugs and has multiple fractures on her face. She underwent a re-constructive surgery.

Gate charges are 250/= advance and 500/= at the door. Advance Tickets are now available at the Dome and via Sarakasi’s staff and dancers.

Call for Proposals for Artists: Danish Culture Fund

The Danish Embassy frequently receives requests for assistance from Kenyan and Danish (performing) artists in the field of development of art and music and exhibitions in museums and the like.
The Embassy feels the need to work with local (Kenyan) and Danish performing artists and cultural organisations to promote cultural exchange between the individuals, arts groups and/or cultural organizations and through this also strengthen the public diplomacy and communication efforts of the Embassy which are very important as per the latest strategy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark.
As part of the projected milestones, the project intends to help individuals, art groups or organizations in the area of culture; engage both Kenyan and Danish people in cultural exchange; to create public diplomacy and communication through cultural activities. The implementation period of the project should not exceed 1 ½ years.

Event: Amani Lazima, Aug. 20 2011 @ Huruma Grounds

Sarakasi Trust in conjunction with the Norwegian Embassy is hosting peace events dubbed Amani Lazima (Peace is A must!). These are monthly events held between December 2010 and November 2011 in some of the major slums in Nairobi. So far Amani Lazima has successfully covered Korogocho, Mathare, Kangemi, Kawangware, Kibera, Dandora and Majengo.
Together with on the ground stakeholders and (grassroots) youth organizations the aim is to approach the youth of the informal settlements and involve them in activities that are designed to reach out to interest the youth, create a positive attitude, generate self-esteem, promote peace and understanding, a feeling of ownership and to empower the youth on issues like entrepreneurship, violence, gender issues, etc.

Rules for Dancers
Form a crew of six (6) dancers.
All crew members must be 18+ and ready to travel. Please carry your passport.
Each Crew should also prepare two (2) different three (3) minute routines.
Each Track should be Hip-Hop (110-135bpm) containing NO obscene lyrics. Please carry a CD and a back-up CD.
The Dress Code is STREET. But avoid branded or obscene outfits.
Show respect for your opponents. No bad attitude or foul language will be tolerated.

The winning crew will represent Pan-Africa Championship in Ghana from July 23 to August 5 2011
