About
Born in the year of Independence, Tabitha Wa Thuku began her creative practice as a young, self-taught artist and one of the only female artists of her generation. With a career of over three decades, Wa Thuku has developed a painterly language unencumbered by convention, her works distinguished by a brooding palette which ranges from subtle browns to rich reds.

Wa Thuku originally studied Textiles and Clothing Technology at Kenya Polytechnic, then from 1996 to 1999 she attended the Buruburu Institute of Fine Arts. She has undertaken various workshops and residencies to develop a wide range of techniques, demonstrated in her extensive body of work. In addition to her own artistic production, she has also worked as an art educator, teaching and mentoring children and young artists. Wa Thuku has exhibited regularly throughout her career in Kenya and abroad, including in The Netherlands, Italy, Hong Kong and Denmark.

In 2022 her work was featured in a retrospective exhibition alongside Yony Waite and Theresa Musoke at Circle Art Gallery. Her work is included in private and public collections in Kenya, including those of the National Museum of Kenya, the Safaricom collection, PwC and MMC Africa Law.

About

Neighbouring Lands, is selection of Tabitha wa Thuku’s (Kenyan, b. 1963) vibrant and fluid, dreamlike landscapes consists of a body of work focused on the portrayal of nature and the environment; a theme wa Thuku has been referring to in her work since she began painting in the 80s.

Her work invites the viewer on a mysterious journey through the artist’s own real and imaginary landscapes from around the world.

If you study them carefully and take time, you find yourself following her paths and streams into the depths of each painting. Tabitha often uses dark hues, reds, browns and blacks which allude to the dark side of human interference in nature.

Believing vehemently in the regeneration of our environment, wa Thuku’s uses her work to criticise the pillaging nature of our society and confirm her belief in growing and replenishing the natural world.

Exhibition: Shelter for a Sage, Oct. 23-Nov. 23 2012 @ Talisman Restaurant

Dates: October 23-November 23, 2012
Venue: Talisman Restaurant

For Zihan Kassam, ‘Shelter for a Sage’ is a world in which a philosopher might reside; an old country dream where those who miss nature can take refuge; where they repose. For renowned artist, Tabitha wa Thuku, it is the home she looks forward to after having experienced a trying time in the recent past. She hopes for a humble home again, with a small vegetable patch and modest living quarters where artists who are looking for support; artists, who are so often misunderstood, can find peace of mind.

Together, the two artists, young and veteran, have created nature-abstracts, to remind us not to be preoccupied with the rat-race. Nature will teach the most important of lessons.

Zihan Kassam, art correspondent, is excited to collaborate with renowned artist, Tabitha Wa Thuku, one of the most recognized female artists of the contemporary Kenyan art scene, whose earthy, textured works have traveled to the far corners of the world.

Despite some of the difficulties faced by artists in Kenya, the two artists incite positivity in each other.
