The 1st Showcase Wed. of the year will feature the qanun player D’Bass Ganun from Tanzania, incorporating this ancient Egyptian string instrument into the vibrant traditional music of the Ndengeleko from Rufiji.
About
Mbwana Mtulia, also known as D’bass Ganun, is a talented Tanzanian singer, songwriter, bassist and Qanun (Ganun) player. The Ganun is a 10th Century ancient Egyptian string instrument.D’bass picked up an interest in the instrument from his late father, a Qanun maestro, who tutored him. D’bass’s Ndengeleko tribe (from the island town of Rufiji) incorporated the instrument into their vibrant traditional music to create a unique contemporary sound that delivers a memorable listening experience.

Swahili Ally is a singer and kora player from Tanga, Tanzania. Born in a family of Digo musicians, Swahili Ally was coached by his grandparents and elders. He started performing with the Dar es Salaam based group of singers, dancers, musician, Lumumba Theatre Group, before joining the Dhow Music Academy in Zanzibar where he learnt to play the Kora, the iconic West African harp.He has since mastered this string instrument and fluently blends traditional Digo music with the unique sounds of the kora.
