The transport industry and culture of Nairobi, especially Public Service Vehicles such as matatus, buses and human transporters, is very unique and gives interesting inspiration not only sociologically and economically but also aesthetically.

In this exhibition, Kenyan artist Dennis Muraguri has created new wood cuts inspired by matatus while Nishio Workshop Nairobi, an arts initiative unit consisting of Yoshinari Nishio, Sakiko Nishio and David Wagude in collaboration with Jua Kali artisans will show, as part of their new public art project “Bebabebag”, unique-shaped bags made from the very same materials used for seat covers in matatu, reflecting various shapes of loads human transporters carry on the streets everyday.

Opening Reception in the presence of the artist

Dates: From 4th(Fri) to 27th(Sun), May, 2012
Venue: Le Rustique Restaurant, General Mathenge Drive, Westlands, Nairobi

Solo exhibition by contemporary artist Yoshinari Nishio and his artists collective, Nishio Workshop Nairobi.
The exhibition will feature a series of new works titled KANGAERU that were produced through clipping and re-composing different patterns of Kanga during a workshop that took place in Korogocho (Nairobi).

The patterns in different colors were set free from traditional arrangements and rules, thus seeking a new type of order and story by hands of the artist, or by hands of participants of the workshop.

Later on a street intervention was publicly held on Langata road(Nairobi) with street vendors referring to the catwalk of a fashion show.

The documenting photos -taken by James Muriuki – of this performance will be exhibited as well.

Home_N Gallery is pleased to invite you to the pre-open exhibition MAP PAMOJA from the 14th November to 18th December 2011, before the official opening in January next year.
Home_N Gallery is a private homely gallery as well a house and atelier of  a Japanese contemporary artist, Yoshinari Nishio, and opens as exhibition space to all sorts of people. We will regularly have a unique series of temporary exhibitions and workshop programmes focused on something interesting around Nairobi.
In the pre- open exhibition MAP PAMOJA, our visitors will be mapping their each favorite place on the map of Nairobi covering the whole wall of the gallery.  The map covered with others’ personal and memorial places would hopefully renew the image of Nairobi in your mind. During the period, photos of the Nishio’s past art works are also on display.
