EARTHDANCE Nairobi, Sep 3-4 2011 @ Racecourse

Earthdance Nairobi @ Nairobi Racecourse
3rd September 2011 6pm – 4 September 1pm.

EARTHDANCE: It’s more than just a party, it’s a global movement.
Since its inception in 1997, Earthdance has been held annually in over 500 locations in 80 countries!
In 2009 Kenya joined the movement and Earthdance Nairobi was born. 2010 was bigger and better. And now its time for the 2011 event!
A celebration of peace, love, unity, respect, sustainability, social justice and Electronic Dance Music!

Unfortunately this year’s Nairobi event will not be synchronized to the global event which occurs on 24th September due to scheduling issues. The prayer for peace will still be observed at 2 am. The event is still fully sanctioned by Earthdance Global.

Each public Earthdance event commits 50% or more of its profits to a charity addressing peace, sustainability, or social justice.

Leave the bad attitudes at home and come smile and dance with us.

For centuries, the desert town of Agadez has served as a converging point for the great camel caravans driven by the Tuareg that link West Africa with North Africa and the Mediterranean. Born in 1980 at a nomadic camp near this dusty outpost, the young guitarist and songwriter Omara “Bombino” Moctar was raised during an era of armed struggles for Tuareg independence and violent suppression by government forces. Bombino’s electrifying jams capture the spirit of resistance and rebellion while echoing with guitar riffs reminiscent of fellow Africans Tinariwen and Ali Farka Touré not to mention rock and blues icons such as Jimi Hendrix, John Lee Hooker and Jimmy Page. Already a superstar in the Tuareg community, with the release of Agadez on Cumbancha Discovery (April 18th in Europe and April 19th in North America), Bombino’s stature as one of Africa’s hottest young guitarists will be revealed to the world.

Just thirty years old, Bombino has earned renown throughout the Sahara for his guitar wizardry, and his bootleg tapes are traded among music fans in the region like illicit treasures. Some of Bombino’s early and live recordings have made their way into the hands of enthusiasts in the West, and in 2006 Bombino traveled to California with the band Tidawt to record with Keith Richards and Charlie Watts of the Rolling Stones. He even served as Angelina Jolie’s guide to the region when she visited a few years ago. His Casanova good looks, enigmatic charisma and natural charm have endeared him to his fans, and his compelling life story and socially conscious songs led him to be the subject of an award-winning new documentary film, Agadez, the Music & the Rebellion, that is currently making the rounds of film festivals in the U.S. and Europe.

Stefan Schneider in Concert, Sept. 3 2011 @ Goethe

Date: September 3, 2011
Venue: Goethe-Institut Auditorium
Time: 8pm
Entry: Free

Stefan Schneider is a legendary figure in the international scene of electronic and experimental music. Together with his bands Kreidler (1994-99) and to rococo rot (since 1995), he was involved in drafting a collective electronic music, whose character is formative worldwide.
Schneider also used to play with the pioneers of electronic music Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Moebius (Cluster). Stefan recorded his last solo release The African Chamber together with Nicholas Addo Nettey who was part of Fela Kuti’s band in the 70s and now lives in Berlin. The African Chamber plays with a (European) fiction of traditional African music without any authentic background. In fact, it is his first time to travel to Africa!
Stefan Schneider is here to start a new cooperation with Sven Kacirek and musicians from the drummer village near Malindi.
