MUSIC AVENUE LISTENING PARTY – Acoustic Boulevard
The Music avenue concert series comes back with a largely acoustic take on the music of Frank Koine.
Exploring the depth and breadth of the voice behind the upcoming solo album; Music Avenue.
Acoustic Boulevard explores the softer side of the singer/song writer, appealing to the emotions expressed through the lyrics and tunes of some of the songs closest to his heart.

Among the repertoire is a fresh take on one of the earliest solo releases: ‘Songa mbele’, which discusses loss, pain and finding courage to keep moving. Another song that expresses the pain experienced with the finality of a breakup, ‘Kipepeo’ a popular track with his social media fans makes a comeback from the first Music avenue listening party staged in November 2014. Exploring the theme of love and commitment is ‘Penzi la Kweli’, a soulful duet that captures a conversation between lovers committing to their love for each other with one asking the other to lead them to true love.

‘Whispering your name’ is an inspirational piece with piano accompaniment. The song is carefully weaved together with the writer making deliberate use of poetic prose to express his dependence on spiritual help. In the song are confessions that he seems to finally understand what it means to love and share through experiencing God’s love.

To celebrate the place of song and dance in the context of African culture is the song ‘Africa’ which suggests that the continent’s culture is deeply rooted in the ability to celebrate through song and dance and the fact that people in Africa always find a reason to sing and dance no matter the circumstances.

There is a lot to expect from the Acoustic Boulevard which promises to be full of diversity and story telling as Frank Koine continues to unveil the music expected to make a debut in the soon to release album, Music Avenue.

About
For this edition of #PAWAFilmForum, Pawa254 will screen the award winning documentary film ‘As Old As My Tongue – The Myth and Life of Bi Kidude’ by Screen Station Productions with Busara Promotions in celebration of her 2nd anniversary.

The Pawa254 Film Forum is committed to showcasing independently produced, often non- commercial work that has little opportunity of reaching the general public; highlighting social, political, cultural and historical realities. By featuring the voices and visions of truly independent media artists from Kenya and beyond, we aim to expose diverse audiences to a range of artistic expressions, cultural perspectives and critical inquiries.

SYNPOSIS
An intimate portrait of living legend Bi Kidude, probably the oldest singer on the world stage today. Her home island of Zanzibar has long been a meeting point for black African and Arabic influence. The island’s music is its most potent expression.

Bi Kidude beguiles audiences wherever she travels but domestically she continually courts controversy, her behaviour challenging perceptions of the role of women in a Muslim society.

As Old As My Tongue reveals the dramatic contrasts in the life of this iconic musician and features a classic soundtrack spanning one hundred years of Swahili music.

About
What constitutes an artistic identity, and how has that concept changed for Kenyan musicians over the years? In a recent interview with Music In Africa, Tabu Osusa of Ketebul Music suggested the only way young musicians will secure a distinctive identity is by embracing traditional music.

Santuri East Africa and Ketebul Music will present a day of activities investigating this claim, and seeking solutions to questions of identity, tradition, innovation – and the role of technology in music production. The event will combine a co-creation session between older artists from Kenya’s rich history of musical past, curated by Ketebul, with younger musicians, producers and DJs representing the digital age from the Santuri network. Following this, a panel discussion will take place at Goethe-Institut’s Auditorium, investigating the results for the co-creation workshop, as well as inviting noted guest speakers from the music industry, media, and cultural curators.

Finally, the space will evolve into a party that will incorporate the past, present and future of Kenyan music, presenting live performances and DJ sets from a diverse selection of artists.
