Synopsis
Komaki NAGAI, 31, was raised in the working-class Kyojima area of Tokyo. She has had enough of her good-for-nothing younger husband, Noritomo, and takes her daughter, Noriko, aka ‘Nonchan,’ back to live with her mother at the Kyojima home that she was raised in. Komaki doesn’t want to become a burden to her mother, Fumiyo, so looks for a job. But there are few employment opportunities for an over-30 single mother with no qualifications and no experience. She accepts a part-time job for the time being, and re-encounters her former senior high school classmate, Tateo. Komaki is developing a passion for Tateo, who takes her to a small tavern called “Totoya.” There, she tastes the ‘mackerel in miso’ and is astonished. She is completely enraptured by the taste, and becomes determined to open the “ultimate cheap but tasty box lunch shop.” She enlists the assistance of “Totoya,” but then…

Rug Sale

Antique Oriental Rug Exhibition & Sale, Sept. 17 2016 @ BagFace Grounds

Rug Sale
Date: September 17, 2016
Venue: BagFace Grounds
Time: 10 am – 5 pm

About
This is a rare opportunity to view & buy rugs from my personal collection of over 400 old and antique hand-woven oriental pieces. They have been individually sourced from all over the world, including Afghanistan, Iran, Turkey, The Caucasus and Turkmenistan. Many are tribal, while others are more sophisticated ‘city’ works. This is the largest and best collection of such rugs in the country, and because of their number they can only be displayed all together every few months. They will be laid out in BagFace’s extensive grounds. Drinks and snacks will be offered (free of charge) as viewing so many pieces can be aesthetically overwhelming! All the rugs are of course for sale, and can be previewed on www.bagface.co.uk. There you will also see details and prices.

I am always searching for interesting pieces but beautiful old rugs are becoming ever-harder to find at reasonable prices. The supply is extremely finite, and the growing demand will inevitably lead to future price rises: such antique pieces make fantastic and life-enriching investments, unlike the modern, somewhat characterless pieces that are widely available in many malls and shops.

This makes a fun and instructive day out, and one that will hopefully lead to your acquiring a piece of woven history.

About
On 6 May 2016 the Kenya Government announced that it will shut down the Dadaab Refugee Camp by November 2016 and subsequently disbanded the Department of Refugee Affairs (DRA), all in effort to forcefully return Somali refugees back to Somalia. The Kenyan authorities claim that Dadaab has lost its humanitarian character and that it is used as a training ground for terrorist.

Amnesty International and the Rift Valley Institute have invited the British writer and former researcher for Human Rights Watch in the Horn of Africa, Ben Rawlence (author of River Congo and City of Thorns), to participate in a discussion on the closure of the Daadab Camp.

On this occasion, the Kenyan writer, actor and journalist, John Sibi-Okumu, will host Ben Rawlence in a literary conversation on his book ‘City of Thorns’ which interweaves the stories of nine individuals to show what life is like in the world’s largest refugee camp and sketches the wider political forces that keep the refugees trapped there.
