Launch of the book ‘Kenyan and Ethiopian Athletics – towards an alternative scientific approach’ by Benôit Gaudin and Bezabih Wolde.

Will the ‘secret’ of East African runners be revealed? Despite decades of research, no study has provided any sort of evidence that portrays biological otherness among populations in Kenya and Ethiopia which produces the best athletes in middle and long distance runners.

Swahili Ally is a singer and kora player from Tanga, Tanzania. Born in a family of Digo musicians, Swahili Ally was coached by his grandparents and elders. He started performing with the Dar es Salaam based group of singers, dancers, musician, Lumumba Theatre Group, before joining the Dhow Music Academy in Zanzibar where he learnt to play the Kora, the iconic West African harp.

He has since mastered this string instrument and fluently blends traditional Digo music with the unique sounds of the kora.

Short experimental films, ‘Sci-Fi trilogy’, by Larissa Sansour, Palestinian multimedia artist, and ‘Home Movies Gaza’ by Basma Alsharif. Under the common themes of loss, belonging, heritage and national identity, the films explore different aspects of the political turmoil in the Middle East.

The screening coincides with a photographic exhibition ‘On Palestine’ by Dr. Annie Pfingst at the British Institute in Eastern Africa.

Yoga Dance Flows offers yogis a space for new levels of self-expression through the integrated practice of yoga and dance. Asana that is usually still, will be expanded & rhythmic while still honouring the breath. Through the grounding, sweaty, intensity of dance, participants will move into yogic dance combinations as a practice of lively expressions of movement on the mat set to live, traditional drumming.

Vee Kafi and Sharon Ochieng are Kenyan Percussionists who are in an all female percussion band.
