A Shakespearean tale of star-crossed lovers: Hermia loves Lysander. Helena loves Demetrius; Demetrius used to love Helena but now loves Hermia….and so the plot thickens.

Meantime, Oberon and Titania, King and Queen of Fairies are locked in a dispute. And Puck the King’s servant is dispatched with magic love drops that cause a sleeping victim to fall in love with the first person or creature they see upon awakening. To add to it, a group of craftsmen come into the woods in the midst of it all. Chaos ensues with spells and misplaced potion but eventually all is well.

For one hour before both Sunday matinee performances the queen of the fairies Titania herself will be holding a Rose Petal Party where all of the young audience members will have the opportunity to go backstage to see the magical tree that houses the mischievous Puck, the throne from which Duke Theseus and Queen Hippolyta rule, and the magical donkey head that transforms Bottom, as well as all of the brand new costumes and backdrops up close. They will be given cupcakes and have the opportunity to get the autographs of the stars of the ballet.

This Shakespearean classic will provide the 85 members of Dance Centre Kenya’s elite Ballet Company the opportunity to showcase their talent, while giving young and old audience members alike an opportunity to witness a spectacular event and be whisked away to the land of magic and fairytale. The proceeds from these performances will go to DCK Sponsorship Programme.

Since its inception in 2015, a cornerstone of Dance Centre Kenya’s mission to spread dance throughout East Africa is to include those who come from an underprivileged background. In this cast more than 15% of the performers come from humble means, but the audience would never know, as we are a united team of dancers.

With two new sets from renowned visual artist Naomi Wambui Mwai, all new costumes designed by Nathalie Fusillo and the team at Palacina Interiors, and the ingenuity of Artistic Director Cooper Rust, the sheer magic of theatre will come to life through the elegant medium of ballet this March.

Dance Centre Kenya is proud to introduce to you our fourth full length Nutcracker performance. This year, for the very first time in Kenya, we have a live Orchestra – The Nairobi Philharmonic – performing the full score of the Nutcracker together with the Ghetto Classics Children’s Choir as they accompany the ballet cast.

They will be under the baton of American Conductor Jonathan Rush joined by additional musicians coming from Europe. Paul Nduati, who has featured in the Kenyan classical music scene as a piano accompanist over the last 10 years, will be the orchestra’s pianist.

Dance Centre Kenya’s Artistic Director Cooper Rust is delighted to welcome international dancer Baris Erhan of the Turkish State Opera and Ballet, who will perform the role of the Sugar Plum Cavalier. Alongside him, on opening night only, Dance Centre Kenya’s own Joanna Priwieziencew will perform the role of the Sugar Plum Fairy with Artistic Director Cooper Rust performing the role of the Snow Queen.

Children will enjoy Sugar Plum Tea Parties one hour prior to all Sunday performances with juice, cupcakes and sweets plus the opportunity of a backstage tour and the chance to meet the Sugar Plum Fairy and the other characters from the ballet.
