About
Traversing Soweto streets, backyards in Nairobi, dusty Jordanian alleys, Peregrinate invites viewers to consider the intimate politics of home and belonging, as well as the possibilities inherent in dislocation, or a lack of anchoring, and the routes one takes to find a way. Sub-titled ‘field notes on time travel and space’, the exhibition examines notions of spatial politics, the economics of time and travel, and the kinds of access granted to travellers.

The travels of three different wanderers are juxtaposed as temporal sculptures to chronicle the personal experience of journeying within the home, neighbourhood and country, as well as the act of departing for distant places.

Peregrinate features the work of three photographers: South Africans Thabiso Sekgala and Musa Nxumalo, and Kenyan Mimi Cherono Ng’ok. The exhibition explores the concept of photography as a common method of investigation, discovery and representation – an act of wandering undertaken by the photographer as traveller and explorer. Jointly curated by the featured photographers, this exhibition is the final stage for the three participants as part of the Goethe-Institut portfolio workshop, the Photographer’s Master Class.

The evening will be musically accompanied by Monroe Marcus, who will be playing a DJ set.

Each of us sees the world differently. And often, what’s in your mind is what you see first. Our connection to the earthliness of being human by nature fetches our emotional nuclei to one root; love. Hence Nuru Bahati’s perceptive stab.
Scheduled for release on 4th September, his 33rd birthday, PEOPLE CHANGE, is an online exhibition surpassing present times while traversing the past to today. It’s work of art that offers personal interpretation, creativity and intuitive experience.
A world constantly battling the consequences of poor human decisions needs people with knack and skill to help it heal.That highly depends on our consciousness; the power and will to hearken to the intricate motion of events, of ourselves, of nature and energy. It is only by seeing beyond physical orientation can we renew mind and spirit – to comprehend what lies within.
Sail in thought through this striking assortment. The artist insists he did not name the pieces so as not to limit anyone’s imagination. Thank God for the freedom, because it gives you a chance to interact with his material from an untailored point of view. Whatever you interpret could mean somethingthat awakes you. You are encouraged to free yourself through this.
Natively from Mombasa and practising his craft in Nairobi, Kenya, Nuru hopes to help each person converse inwardly withself at the meeting of PEOPLE CHANGE. The title was inspired by the strangeness and mystery of humanity. Indeed what we have made of this world astounds.

Aaron Rimbui is a jazz keyboardist, composer and performing artiste whose music is best described as colorful rhythmic melodies with African infusions served on a funky contemporary jazz platter. Aaron’s ear for music was spotted while still a toddler. Aaron started off his performance career in 2001 and has opened for leading artistes including Hugh Masekela, Kirk Franklin and Gerald Albright and worked as a band director with Tusker Project Fame. During this time he has performed with a host of artists including Emmanuel Jal, Lionel Loueke, Suzanne Owiyo, Eric Wainaina, Morris ‘Mo’ Pleasure, Maurice Kirya, Moussa Diallo among many others.

Together with Eric Wainaina, Aaron wrote and produced the theme song and music score for BBC’s Tinga Tinga Tales which ran on the Disney Channel. Aaron has performed in Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Uganda as well as the United States of America He has 2 albums to date: the first Keys of Life released December 2005 and his second, Alfajiri released June 2009. Aaron is one of the pivotal forces of the Jazz culture in Kenya playing a vital role in popularizing jazz music through the quarterly “All That Jazz” concert series and as a radio host on The Capital Jazz Club 98.4; http://www.aaronrimbui.com/
